Today's Mass Shooting

Just received a full briefing on the tragic shooting at NAS Pensacola in Florida, and spoke to @GovRonDeSantis. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. We are continuing to monitor the situation as the investigation is ongoing.

King Salman of Saudi Arabia just called to express his sincere condolences and give his sympathies to the families and friends of the warriors who were killed and wounded in the attack that took place in Pensacola, Florida....

....The King said that the Saudi people are greatly angered by the barbaric actions of the shooter, and that this person in no way shape or form represents the feelings of the Saudi people who love the American people.

NAS Pensacola is a huge source of pride for all of Northwest Florida. It is the home of naval aviation. It is the home of the Blue Angels. In our home, this is who we are.

Thank you for keeping Pensacola in your hearts and in your prayers as we deal with this difficult day.

That's been true from even before Sept 11 2001.

Y.

None of the 9/11 Terrorists was a serving Saudi Military Officer, though. That does make a difference.

Maybe they should change the wording of that sign on the entrance to the Main FLight School at Penesecola:

"Through These Doors Pass the Best Damn Crazed Terrorists In The World".

I think there was even an NCIS episode about this.

Daily Mail reports that the guy wrote a sort of manifesto online hours before the killings where he said that America is a nation of evil. Also six other Saudi nationals were arrested or detained including three who filmed the entire incident.

Nothing confirmed.

Probably wanted to be up close and personal.

My workplace was all a buzz about the Sailor who shot three people in the shipyard at Pearl Harbor several days ago. It seems he was a submarine topside watch (sentry) armed with an M4 rifle and a pistol. I read he was having problems and going to be subject to NJP soon; prior to the shooting.

My question is: what happened to “extreme vetting”, especially of foreign nationals (and especially of people who happen to be from a certain religion) training on US military bases? And how the hell did this guy get a gun on to the base?

Considering our permanent state of post-9/11 paranoia and stringent security measures, one would think that the US military of all institutions would be more attuned to this kind of thing...

And how the hell did this guy get a gun on to the base?
Illegal purchase then bring it on base inside a backpack or other personal item?

I've never been searched on the way into a naval base except for the time the gate guards had me raise my hood once. There are random inspections of vehicles and some ships use x-ray and metal detectors prior to going on board.

It was employed in this case. Nothing pertinent was discovered during the process.

It may be important to note that in addition to being a Saudi national, the shooter was 21 - solidly college-age, and attending a school. In point of fact, the specific location he started shooting people at was the classroom building. I have a feeling there are some who will absolutely refuse to consider it; but we might end up having to confront the fact that a Muslim student who shoots up his school campus may have chosen to do it for other-than-religious reasons.

Reports now saying the FBI is looking for some Saudi students at Navy Station Pensacola who are not coming forward.

...According to a New York Times report, Alshamrani watched mass shooting videos at a dinner party the night before his attack.

It's okay, I'm sure he was just blowing off some steam with a totally normal and completely harmless revenge fantasy that was absolutely no cause for any kind of concern or special attention.

Daily Mail said:
The Saudi military student who killed three and injured 12 when he opened fire at Navy Station Pensacola on Friday used a loophole in the law to purchase the handgun he used in the attack.

Mohammed Saeed al-Shamrani, 21, bought the firearm legally from a store in Pensacola by providing the business owner with his hunting license, sources told NBC on Saturday. Non-citizens are prevented from buying firearms, unless they are in possession of such a license.

The New York Times has reported the handgun as being a Glock 45 9-millimeter with an extended magazine.

al-Sharami is said to have had four to six other magazines in his possession at the time the shooting occurred. It's unclear when al-Shamrani, 21, bought the handgun...

Hmmm, the Daily Mail got something right; sort of. Not a loophole though.

An alien admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa is prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving, or possessing a firearm or ammunition unless the alien falls within one of the exceptions provided in 18 U.S.C. 922(y)(2), such as: a valid hunting license or permit, admitted for lawful hunting or sporting purposes, certain official representatives of a foreign government, or a foreign law enforcement officer of a friendly foreign government entering the United States on official law enforcement business.

[18 U.S.C. 922(g)(5)(B) and 922(y)(2); 27 CFR 478.11 and 478.32]

I'm curious how a 9mm pistol is useful in hunting deer, turkey or waterfowl.
It isn't unless it is modified with a longer barrel and shoulder stock. Even then it is only good for smaller game.

But issue is that it appears that the student bought it legally.

There seems to be 300 million plus legal guns in the US. There is ample evidence of legal guns being used to kill people. Is this one in some way significant?
