The Trump Presidency: Part 18

Throwing in wild hypotheticals I see. That didn't happen to your knowledge.

Trump lies non-stop. What would he do to stop embarrassing news? Like maybe the Russians have much more than two hookers peeing on a bed. Maybe they peed and crapped on his face.

You're argument that because Clinton lied about oral sex it means he migbt betray his country to a foreign power is amusing considering Trump's bending over for Putin.

I think you misread his post.

In other news...

TN legislator called for ridding US of higher education in order to "end a liberal breeding ground"

This is the annoyingly influential anti-education wing of the GOP, so one probably shouldn't be too surprised at the inanity, but still... it's actually something of a backhanded compliment. People who actually know what they're talking about are very, very likely to act to protect abortion rights. Therefore, he's advocating for getting rid of people who actually know what they're talking about. It's a very current Republican Party way of doing things.

Getting rid of the educated is one of the first steps.

Suffice it to say this, yet again:

The GOP is not, in any way, a party of "conservatism", or "small government".

It is a reactionary party of fearful white christians screeching about the ******* and spics robbing them, the ragheads getting ready to kill them, the the queers recruiting their children - and the various grifters that have learned to scam them again and again - the NRA, gold and MRA sellers, televangelists, and the like. And it has been this party for decades, with increasing fervor, particularly as younger people look at their rank and file, note the brazen hypocrisy and open celebration of cruelty and destruction, and say "Ugh, you people sicken me, I'm leaving."

Reagan was loudly anti-black people back in the 80s, and long before then, howling about the horrors of integration when he was governor. The "Order" part of "Law and Order" was "White men rule the country, darker skinned people serve them and wallow in poverty. What do you mean, Native Americans - we're the Native Americans!" They're still there, obviously, as seen by their open love of police violence against black people. GWB and Cheney sold them on anti-Muslim and LGBT fervor. Media figures like Fox News and AM Radio have pushed them right along the way, also peddling anti-science so that dinosaur industries could keep lumbering along.

Surprise! Now they're led by a white supremacist who pardons war criminals and refuses to exercise because he thinks it makes you die sooner. His senior advisory team includes a Christianist AG and a Jewish guy who would have banned himself from fleeing to the country from Nazi Germany. Their leading intellectuals are guys who yell at confused college students, and their lead media figures openly claim that Hispanics are dirtying up America. Dolt 45 is a result of these fearful, angry chumps being offered the real deal instead of half-measures, or guys who openly reject such fear like McCain.

The "cultural decline" lines used to just be a bit of red meat to rile up the base while neocons actually ran the day to day business of gutting social programs and making sure all the wealth of the nation ended up in the hands of the rich.

As society crumbles and neocon talking points become increasingly unconvincing, the party had to lean harder and harder into the pure id talking points of cultural resentment. Trump capitalized on this sentiment, but the ease in which the entire party slid into proto-fascism is very telling. The groundwork has been laid for decades. A handful of never Trumpers make a bit of noise on the way out of power, but the rest of the mainstream falls into line enabling the nationalist agenda.

Hey President **** head, impeachment proceedings are not meant to be referenda on popularity, they are meant to be inquiries into crimes. How much you party loves you is irrelevant to whether or not impeachment proceeding are appropriate.

Thanks for this. I've posted this sentiment in the thread before, just less eloquently.

trump keeps saying "I gave you the greatest economy in the history of history, how can you impeach me?" and I have yet to read a piece or see a person say "wtf does that one thing have to do with the other?".

Max Boot used to be a stalwart GOPer who has had his own "come to Jesus" revelation and now writes in opposition to the GOP for the Washington Post. His op-ed today is entitled, GOP deserves to be voted out of existence.

But read the whole thing; nothing brand new but quite an indictment.

Stand by and you'll get you 1:1 odds on trump tweeting about "lil Max Boot and what know-nothing nobody he is"

Nixon was about to get us out of Vietnam, which was a VERY popular move. And it didn't stop anything in terms of impeachment.

Maybe, but then again there wasn't the same kind of hyper-partisanship back then.

I cannot conceive of any evidence that would cause a GOP-led senate to convict President Trump of anything. OTOH they could argue that part of their motivation for acquittal was to try and maintain the economic health of the US and as such were exercising their patriotic duty. ;)

There's no Howard Baker in this crowd. The only thing that could move them is public opinion, and that's going nowhere fast, what with the alternate reality bubble that didn't exist in the olden days, and a personality cult like something we've never seen in modern times if ever.

This country was broken even before Trump. Now it's broken on top of broken. Sometimes (like right now) it feels like the breakage is irreparable.

When grabbing them by the pussy doesn't take him down, and crapping on POWs doesn't take him down, and colluding with Russia doesn't take him down, and praising neo nazis doesn't take him down, I'm not sure that there's even such a thing as an October surprise capable of taking him down. But seeing how sloppy he is in his dealings, maybe there's some juicy surprises already in someone's back pocket waiting for October that will put a nail in his coffin.

I hope so. I also hope that I'll get a pony for xmas.

The surprise for trumpers will likely come in November when they learn that 42% is not a majority.

Interestingly, though, he thought it important enough to hush up the fact that he had sex with a porn star so to pay her off to prevent it coming out in October.

He also thought it was important enough to personally write the first version of the lies about Junior colluding with Russians.

Neither is 46.1%, but he still won the electoral college.

The only realistic chance that Trump has of winning 2020 is voter apathy, and yet he's being very helpful in minimizing that. He keeps pandering to that 42% base and insulting everyone else because he craves their adulation, not because it's a politically smart strategy.
