UK - December 2019 General Election

Stop the world I want to get off.

The bare faced cheek of the man. If this cretin wins an election I will cry

His dad’s defending him.

“That’s quite a pejorative thing to say about the Great British public,” Gosling suggested.

Johnson said: “They couldn’t spell Pinocchio if they tried, I shouldn’t have thought.” He then challenged Gosling to spell it.

Johnson said he had been trying to make the point humorously, but he thought it was “utterly absurd and wrong that you can read out on air a tweet coming in from one of your readers which calls the prime minister a liar. I think it is amazing you can do that.”

Grey Squirrels are foreign too, whilst red ones are too difficult to find and rather too small for a decent meal - so that's squirrel off the menu :(

Rabbits were introduced by the Normans so they are French!

Anyone else find this weeks support for Johnson (or attacks on Corbyn) from the religious establishment uncomfortably similar to the situation with Trump & Evangelicals?

I am not sure about uncomfortably. I expect the religious organisations to be just as self interested as any other business.
The board of Jews are right wing anyway, but they would naturally oppose anyone like Corbyn who stands up for Palestine. It is not surprising that, with no new anti-Semitic incidents in the Labour party for some time, they nevertheless are screaming about it from the rooftops at election time.
The CofE is no longer interested in the poor and needy. Over 99% of their income is spent on the CofE, mainly building upkeep and clergy. Not sure if they have said anything but their congregation tends to be more right wing than the country. The Tories would do more to preserve the unfair advantages the church gets so I would expect them to favour Boris. Of course Boris's previous anti Muslim comments also raise his standing in the church.

As a CofE treasurer, I can state that is completely false.

I don't think that's particularly true, either, but feel free to refer to whatever polling data you're relying on.

It's not the fact that they're in favour of the Conservative candidate per se, that is hardly unexpected and old hacks about the CofE being the "Tory Party at Prayer" have always had a degree of truth to them, it's rather when these proported 'moral leaders' have no problem with a proven liar & serial adulterer in both cases.

Yes's a well-worn expression, but it's actually at least a hundred years old, its first appearance in print being on 28 November 1919 in the Western Morning News. "Conservative Party at prayer" is even older, first appearing in the London Daily News in February 1910.

Over a hundred CofE bishops and archbishops condemned Johnson over the language being used in relation to Brexit back in September, much to the chagrin of the likes of the Telegraph.

Happy to be corrected. Do you have data? Last time I looked at the church commissioners accounts all the charitable activities were speeding the word of God as opposed to helping the poor.

It was a broad assumption with church congregations generally being the more elderly in society and the elderly tending to be more right wing. Seems backed up by the British election study panel, which is a collaboration by Oxford and Manchester Unis.

Well, that's where you're going wrong. The Church Commissioners manage the CofE's property portfolio - they're like the Crown Estate for the Church. They only account for 15% of the Church's income.

Watching Boris on the Marr show this morning I see why he tries to duck out of interviews.

Lies and bluster. Not even subtle lies.
Plus blame everything on the labour government and Corbyn even though the former hasn't been in power for nearly 10 years and the latter has never been in power.

Amen. I watched some and had to switch off.

The factchecks are scathing. BJ seems to have no understanding of the concept of "truth" or "integrity ".

Oh and BJ and his sycophants are playing the London Bridge killings up for political advantage.

Sadly the UK electorate seems to have swallowed the lies hook, line and sinker. :(

Jeremy Corbyn is some kind of communist who will take away all your money and melt your granny down for the silver in her hair. It doesn't matter that these are complete lies. The problem IMO is that people are more inclined to believe lies that align with their views than truth that does not.

Whilst at the same time saying that the opposition parties are vile opportunists for pointing out that the perpetrator was released on the Conservatives' watch.

Ten days to go and it looks as if Tories will scrape by a small majority.

https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/homepage.html

Mid range:
Tory: 324
Labour: 226
SNP: 44
LibDem: 15
DUP: 8
SF: 7
Plaid: 4
Alliance: 3
Green: 1

The mid-range of the results is slightly better for the Conservatives than 2017 election, with Labour doing notably worse. SNP does significantly better, LibDem, DUP do slightly worse but the difference is minimal because of the low number of seats in play.

Overall this is a major condemnation of Corbyn and his 'leadership'. If I were a member of Labour I'd demand he resign unless Labour wins a majority. One more sets of polls next week will give the indication of trend, if there is a wobble in support of Tories and an increase in Labour it may yet come to pass. If the opposite is true you Brits can look forward to your own Trump for the next five to twenty years.

Well, the Englanders can, at any rate.
