2020 Democratic Candidates Tracker - Part II

He would be a longshot to win the nomination if he doesn't get significant support from African-Americans, right? And an even longer shot to win the presidency without that support, right?

I don't know. I think it's essential if he's going to win the General. But considering the number of people running and how delegates get sliced up, I can imagine a scenario where it could be irrelevant in the nomination contest.

This article has a harsh analysis on the presidential candidates not planning for SCOTUS challenges:

The Supreme Court will probably overrule decades of progressive precedents and strike down the next Democratic president’s reforms. You would not know this from watching the 2020 Democratic presidential debates. Wednesday’s showdown in Atlanta, the fifth so far, did not include a single question about the courts. Earlier debates allowed for brief discussions of the Supreme Court, but every candidate dramatically underestimated the threat it poses to the Democratic Party. Both the candidates and the moderators appear to be astonishingly naïve about the judiciary’s lurch to the right under Donald Trump. And it is pointless to discuss the Democrats’ ambitious proposals without explaining how they are going to survive at SCOTUS.

It’s not just the debates—Democratic politicians rarely talk about the courts at all. There is an enthusiasm gap between Democrats and Republicans when it comes to the judiciary: GOP voters are more likely to be motivated by the opportunity to fill judicial vacancies, which is why Trump ran on a promise of appointing archconservative judges. Democratic voters focus more on individual political issues, and their party has never prioritized judges—or campaigned on the fact that every political dispute is ultimately resolved as a judicial question. This complacency will prove catastrophic for progressives now that Justice Brett Kavanaugh has replaced Justice Anthony Kennedy, shoring up a conservative majority that will obstruct liberal policies for a generation.

Linky.

It runs through examples from all the major candidates.

Looks like Bloomberg is officially in the race, now. And it looks like Obama's told people to chill out a bit with the worries about the current field of candidates shortly after.

I missed the bit where Obama was made official Gandalf of the Democratic Party, whose advice must be heeded and wisdom deferred to. Bill Clinton's also a two-term ex-president, why aren't people flocking to hear his take on things?

So, um... have any of the other candidates congratulated Biden on his new grandchild?

President Trump would prefer his supporters refer to the opposition party that way. During a rambling, two-hour speech Saturday, Trump referred to one of his critics as “the new star of the Democrat Party,” and to “the new Democrat platform” and “Democrat lawmakers.”

“Not Democratic,” declared Trump. “It’s Democrat. We have to do that. . . . I [like] to say in the speech, the ‘Democrat Party,’ because it doesn’t sound good. But that’s all the more reason I use it, because it doesn’t.”Linky.

It's been a deliberate strategy for trolling the libs for decades. People who use it care.

I did a cursory forum search and all the instances I saw were noun-as-noun use (again, very cursory, but if they are interchangeable I would expect more even odds).

To Republicans, Democracy is a bad and scary thing. So is progress.

"We tried to tell y'all." - ancient African American Proverb.

...Okay, that's being glib, I know that you've been paying attention to GOP voter suppression for at least as long as I've noticed you here. But I also remember that the dems, collectively, have only picked up on this relatively recently, even though members of my family can tell you all about how people like Helms or Reagan were trying their own methods to strip black people of the right to vote.

With his money you'd think he could get the best quality. We live in an era of flared bases and magnetic hinges, there's really little excuse for the funny ER visit stories any more. It's a golden age!

Portable MRIs or CT scanners can't exactly pull up to the WH unnoticed.

My guess is that he won't. He doesn't need to remind the world he's gay. They know. I'm not comfortable watching two men kiss. Women OTOH is another story. But I absolutely DON'T believe it matters on the job. It's also none of my business how you get your freak on.

It's affecting him (or something else is) in Trump v Buttigieg polls.

Why do you insist it is her balloon and not the standard fare spouted by anyone with a microphone that the news media picks up on?

Especially GOP propagandists who really, really want to tap into the "Hillary is the devil!" propaganda that they've kept ready. It's sad, but Trump's not likely to stop his attacks on her and nor is Fox.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had one or both on site already. It's the White House, I'm sure their medicine cabinet is rather better than mine. Mine has grocery store brand bandages and cough medicine.

That's just the thing. Making a gay man POTUS is a bridge too far for a lot of people whether they admit it or not. His electability is my biggest concern about nominating him. I worry about Warren's electability because she's a woman and because she comes off as too much of a liberal flamethrower.
