Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

I gave up after your assumption only conservatives are idiot climate change deniers and presumably you think all of the non conservatives aren't

Perhaps you gave up reading too quickly, because I never said that at all. The only thing I attributed to conservatives was that they didn't "get" Thunberg, as in they didn't fully understand what her goals or approach were. My reference to climate change deniers was completely separate, did not refer to conservatives, and was part of my argument that even many of those who have been paying attention would benefit from getting more facts, as urged by Thunberg.

Understanding of her goals and approach raise questions about her goals and approach. Questions which her fan club answer with, "you don't understand her goals and approach".

And that is the thing I'm criticizing. Not Thunberg herself, but her fans' unwarranted lionization of her.

Odd that you think every person knows everything about climate change that Thunberg does (and that you do). I assume you realize that everyone’s learning process involves hearing about a thing for the first time. A lot of the young people listening to Thunberg may well be hearing details that they have never heard before. At least you acknowledge that there are people who have not yet been paying attention. Those people can still be educated.

Which government do you think has “got this”? Seems that you are one who has not been paying attention. One of Thunberg’s consistent points is that governments havenot “got this”.

We covered this is the climate change is being taught is schools posts but I suppose I'd have to admit that there may have been babies and toddlers in Thunberg's audience who may have gleaned some new knowledge about the subject.

By "got this" I mean that government is going to fix things. Thunberg's only message is to vote. Oh, there was that bit about leaving fossil fuels in the ground but nobody wants to do that so for now we just sit and wait for government to do their thing.

Awesome

Now you are saying no conservatives "get" Greta.

Just out of interest

Do you understand the concept that some conservatives might also be environmentalists?

As you come across as thinking this concept is mutually exclusive.

. . . her fans' unwarranted lionization of her.

Haven't seen that at all. Have seen a whole bunch of people who say they admire her for what she is doing which is a lot more than most people on the planet. If she keeps this pace up she will pass a lot more as she gets older.

The argument you make is the same ridiculous argument a lot of claimed skeptics made against Dawkins. He's annoying! He's arrogant! He shouldn't be preaching! Basically they didn't like how Dawkins delivered his message and you don't like how Greta delivers hers. Tough! It really is none of your business how someone chooses to deliver their message. If you think there is a better way to deliver the message, get off your lazy ass and go do it.

The difference being Dawkins has an education, life experience, qualifications in what he is talking about and didn't stomp his foot refusing to go to school, demand to go places, but not by plane.

Who, in these discussions, do you think needs to be reminded of that?

It's a pretty condescending thing to say..

At least one person in this very thread doubts the extent of future warming and thinks it will arrive far more slowly than scientists predict.

No difference in the ridiculous arguments against both, though. It's ad hominems all the way down.

Another in a long string of mature and reasoned posts. You just can’t help but reason like a 9 year old when you think about Thunberg, can you.

Yes, because pointing out the criticism against Greta is different than Dawkins is acting like a 9 year old.

I tell you what

Why don't we go with pointing out which bit of the above post is wrong.

I will give you a free point for foot stomping as we don't know whether she actually stomped.

She's a campaigner, like the title says. Apparently she is good at it.

I will accept stomping (his) foot.

I will add
- Refusing to go to school
- Demanding to go places.

The two bolded words are things you made up, along with the foot stomping. In fact, most of the criticisms you have posted in this thread are things you have made up.

There used to be a large canine in these forums who posted in a similar manner, and before that, a lumberjack. Emulating them would be poor form.

This simple realisation prompted Greta Thunberg, 15, to protest in the most effective way she knew. She is on strike, refusing to go to school until Sweden’s general election on 9 September to draw attention to the climate crisis. Her protest has captured the imagination of a country that has been struck by heatwaves and wildfires in its hottest summer since records began 262 years ago.

Won't bother with the second one as saying she refuses to take a plane and demanding to go to climate meetings is kind of.... obvious

Unless of course you think people are getting her to portray her need to get there without planes

Again, I did not say that at all. By not getting Thunberg I mean not understanding her strategy and approach. Not that conservatives cannot be environmentalists. Some are.

You don't buy how much of the right wing attacks on Thunberg are to discredit her cause? Otherwise who would care so much about this one 16 year old?
