Yes, you're right, there is no connection between this story and Thunberg save for the one that I made. These kids, and their parents would know all about climate change they teach about it in elementary school. They would have learned nothing new about climate change, nothing.

Are you talking about everywhere in the world? I’d like to know how you can know that.

In first world countries children are taught about greenhouse gasses, but they are soon confronted by deniers, be they world leaders, lesser politicians, media “personalities” and even people on the internet. There needs to be countering forces, and who listens to scientists anyway?

This is Greta’s great achievement. She is countering the deniers and other fools arguing that there are “upsides” to climate change. And, much to the annoyance of some here, people are listening to her.

See, here's the thing: I don't see anyone listening to her, because she's not actually saying anything novel. I see people mobilizing, but my impression is that they were already primed. Not a soul I see is jumping up saying 'I had no idea!'

I was just looking over some news stories about her. On Oct 29, she was awarded another climate person award thingy. She declined it (and a $52,000 prize purse), saying 'climate doesn't need awards'. Good for her!

But i'm still not clear on exactly what she has done. Started some kind of Play Hooky on Fridays Club? And chastising adults with the same broad brush.

Maybe I'm expecting too much in expecting something more substantial. Refusing to use power generated by fossil fuels. Something that shows more than talk talk talk and do not a damned thing. It's the real crisis of our age:all talk no action.

Of curse I'm not talking about the whole world, I linked to a local story and I'm going to go way out in a limb and suggest the causes and effects of climate change are being taught in every jurisdiction that Thunberg has operated in. Were you planning on arguing against that? No, I can see by your next paragraph that you're not.

Again with the "deniers" ? It's almost like you're suggesting that young people are too stupid to make up their own minds when they have access to "both sides" of an argument. This echoes religious parents wanting to protect their precious children fron the evil words of those damn atheists.

You don't thing that reducing shipping time and the required fuel + emissions between China and Europe is a good thing ? I think it sounds like a good thing Who knows though, maybe this new Silk Road overland route will prove to be the better option and we Europe won't need that new arctic shipping route to get their gee gaws from China. Time will tell.

Even such a trivial change as legislating use and recycling of plastics is not going to happen.

I think people going on about their personal attempts at climate change efforts is a bit blow hard and didn't want to be accused of it.

Only to find I was apparently being a blow hard about my efforts even when I hadn't mentioned them.

Which is a tad weird, but all good.

That’s because you are not looking.

Do you not think a lot can be done by governments without everybody in the world stopping driving cars? Because I do. In another thread there is a news report that Australia generates more than 50% of its electricity from renewables, which has resulted mainly from government subsidised solar panels. When our government gets more serious and closes down all coal fired power stations, that percentage will move rapidly.

Australia has had a poor record in this area, but it has shown how quickly change can happen. Government needs pressure put on it to change, and Greta’s movement is helping to increase that pressure.

Let's not overstate this. It's good news, but not that good. The proportion of power delivered to most of the country (WA and NT were excluded) from renewable sources rose briefly above 50%. But it was the first time that it had happened, and it won't be the last.
