Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

Has Greta had anything to say about all those high carbon footprint aircraft dumping fire retardant on the California wildfires?

Of course, you have no right to say anything about climate change unless you have a solution to each and every contribution to the crisis.

Most normal people wouldn't expect this.

Can you point out the few she and her team have?

ETA Whoops, meant to quote Skeptical Greg

No straw required. Why is Greta required to talk about fire fighting in California?

It’s a stupid, non point anyway. If fossil fuels are required to save life and property and there is no available alternative, of course it will happen. Do you think anyone would seriously argue the opposite?

"I don’t understand why I would do that," Thunberg said to laughter and applause from the audience. "I don’t see what I could tell him that he hasn’t already heard, and I just think it would be a waste of time, really."
Haha oh wow.

Telling people stuff they've already heard is literally her entire PR strategy.

The subject wasn't concerned with telling "people". It was concerned with telling Trump.

Do you believe she was mistaken in her evaluation of him in particular?

I have found it endlessly amusing that the climate change deniers and the conservative medium have found this 16 year old girl so very deeply threatening that they feel they must crush her no matter what, including use of many deeply personal attacks. What, after all, is she saying except that we need to listen to the scientists and recognize the severity of the issues and the need to mobilize our responses right now to reduce the climate horrors that are likely to come. She is not being outrageous: the predictions of change, their impacts on human civilization, and the time scale are very real and awful things have already begun to happen.

Some have been offended by being told off by a 16 year old girl- well I would be embarrassed in their place for a 16 year old having to remind me of what we old farts are doing to her future world and how we are selfishly and mindlessly destroying the next generations lives. We are meant to be protectors of our children and their children; instead all too many of us are wildly partying without regard to their future, smugly absorbed in a bubble of denial for temporary gain.

We deserve to be angrily told off! More so, the party needs to be stopped and we need to be slapped from our stupor and start to care about those who will follow us on this planet. The children should arise as a mass because they are who we are screwing over. Our actions are a direct threat to them.

Well said. None of her critics in this thread have provided a decent rebuttal to her position. Because there isn’t one. It is all about infantile personal attacks.

Remember:
1) She's just a kid, she isn't worth listening to
2) She has death threats? Well she's almost an adult, so deal with them like adults do

Just admit it. The climate is screwed and the mass extinction that's predicted to happen are going to happen and it's your fault. When history is written the boomer generation will be remembered for their talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth which gave them lifestyles they refused to change.

Nobody is going to care whether you supported some activist whose entire existence and career came from those "fairy tales of eternal economic growth", they're only going to remember how you trashed the planet in pursuit of keeping up with the Joneses.

The power of positive thinking has over the human psyche is well documented and researched however the atmosphere isn't privy to such luxuries.

  1. Rebuttals to her position are off-topic - go to the science forum
  2. There are almost no critics of her as a person in this thread. There are people who are skeptical observers of the phenomenon and how she got to all that fame in just a single year since she sat in front of her school somewhere in Sweden
  3. There are several critics and amused commentators of the cult that has evolved around her and especially the hilarious thinskinnedness of her local disciples

1. Wrong
2. BS
3. Those comments are off topic.

I don't think anyone finds her threatening, I think they find her annoying.

1- No, they are not. In fact, rebuttals, or lack thereof, to her position are all we have to decide the question posed in the thread title. So far there have been no rebuttals so the evidence is heavily in favour of her being a brave campaigner of the truth.

2- There have been many critics of her as a person, from how she speaks, to how she writes, to whose puppet she is. As for the one year from unknown to famous, that's pretty much how it works these days. In fact, many people become famous in a week with all the reality TV shows out there.

3- Her "disciples" are thin skinned as opposed to all the adults having anxiety attacks over her repeating the facts of climate change? Everything is a regurgitation of the attacks made on every person who tried to make a difference. MLK, Bono, and now Greta. Each and everyone of them attacked by Conservatives who want the status quo maintained.

This thread has become like trench warfare. Those who liken Greta to the latest chicken little vs those who believe her message utterly and in some urgency to change things.
But exactly how?

But, among those whom see the urgency there is not enough to change their own lifestyle all that much nor form a coherent plan to work as a unit to really change a source of the problem.
Vegan or willingness to use less fuel? Or both? As long as my vacation in Bali isn't ruined...
Those that live in cold climates need more fuel for heating and winter transport. How to reduce consumption without giving up something big?

There is no one simple solution. We each must do what is sensible where we are. My solutions won't be useful to any Canadian and I use zero energy to heat or cool my home. None.

Most of us already made changes, involuntary for the law of the land. Most make some grass roots efforts that help some. It all adds up. It just isn't organized in a universal manner.
