2020 Democratic Candidates Tracker - Part II

In a degree of seriousness I do wonder (I said "wonder" I'm not suggesting or demanding that the Dems adopt this as their campaign strategy) if a... inert candidate is what some people are hoping for. Not Trump again, not another Trump, not the Anti-Trump who's gonna do everything Trump didn't do, not a horrible President, not a wonderful President just... a nice vanilla whitebread beige Volvo station wagon of a President. A "dinner at franchise sit down restaurant" President.

I do honestly wonder if there is a degree of "Can we just have a no-drama President? Just someone to just... like maintain for a few years?" somewhere in the cultural psyche?

I, for one, would give almost anything for another Calvin Coolidge. It is my abiding dream to someday elect a president who reports the state of the Union in a letter to Congress (as God and the Founders intended).

I have not actually worked in such a place. But there are things that need doing, that only someone with Presidential authority can do. Sign bills into law, for example.

Though, that may be a bad example, since I'd probably okay with no new laws being passed for four years. We'd need to lock in a four-year budget first, though.

I think perhaps such a framework is not unerectible, although it couldn't be uninspectable or uncorrectable because if an emergency law were uninjectable it certainly wouldn't be uninsurrectable. And of course the usual system wouldn't be unresurrectable if wanted.

Dig him up and run him. Per Dorothy Parker nobody could tell the difference.

You really should stop drinking coffee today.

Coolidge? Really?

With respect to Dorothy Parker, I don't want a zombie in office, not even a zombie Coolidge. I specifically said another Coolidge. I want a clone.

Are you suggesting we resurrect Coolidge and force him to breed? Then artificially incubate and accelerate the growth of the spawn, enhancing them cybernetically? Then link them all into a shared hive mind and turn them loose to assimilate the galaxy? The Borg Coolidgective! Yes, that sounds feasible. But if we're going to employ necromancy in politics let's bring back Fremont instead.

What confuses you about this?

I never thought very much of Coolidge. And thinking he was good simply because he followed the form up until then of making the State of the Union address with a letter does little to affect my opinion. But hey, he was better than Harding. I give you that.

I assume the Coolidge Foundation has DNA samples scraped from White House flatware, and that he can be cloned from these.

Coolidge was laconic overall, and made a point of being exactly the kind of president Joe is talking about. Not thinking very much of Coolidge is very much the point.

It's just not as much fun without necromancy and forced breeding. Exactly what I told my friend Matt when he wondered why attendance was lower at his Halloween party this year.

He also opposed pretty much any regulation on business. Opposed child labor laws and pretty much was a toadie of Rockefeller and big business.

Okay, so some have asked how can we elect Bernie Sanders with his health problems and others have argued that it doesn’t really matter if he drops dead in office if he beats Trump. That’s all that matters. But what if elected and before being sworn in he then drops dead? Could this be an issue? I know that surely it will just go to his vp pick but that doesn’t seem completely obvious that it would haooen.

It is not an issue.

If a winning Presidential candidate dies or becomes incapacitated between the counting of electoral votes in Congress and the inauguration, the Vice President elect will become President, Section 3 of the 20th Amendment.

It could be an issue before the electoral college meets. Well sort of. People don't get this but when we vote for President and Vice President we are actually voting for a slate of electors from the respective States to cast votes for President and VP. They can in theory vote for whomever they want and have on occasion voted for someone else entirely. These are referred to as "faithless electors" (Although some states have laws against this)
I would imagine they all probably would cast their votes EXACTLY as they would have casting their votes for the deceased and allowing the 20th Amendment rules apply. Or the electors might just vote the VP candidate for President and a specified by the VP who he would choose as his VP.
