Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

The boat was the last time I ever heard mention of daddy Thunberg. I just thought it kind of strange that in all the photos of Greta and her supporters, I haven't seen dad mentioned in one. Maybe he's the one taking all those portrait shots Greta posts to social media.

She may be able to drive but she's going to have a tough time renting a hotel room.

Actually, how weird would it be if she actually had a drivers license ?

So...here's my latest Greta speculation, just for fun. She's got some business in Hollywood then she's going to head out to Balckadore Caye to wait for this COP25 boondoggle to get sorted out.

Not even in a narrow, technical sense, except by twisting the definition of "child" into meaninglessness.

She's a teenager, and in most cultures and points in history, 16 would be considered a young adult. "Child" is best reserved for the pre-pubescent; and for insults from reactionaries and conservatrolls who are desperate to prevent people from understanding how hard they're working to destroy the environment in the name of short-term greed.

Reactionaries and what?

"Child" is used for effect in news stories of all stripes. It only depends on how much sympathy the author wants for the person in question.

Example: 16 year-olds crossing the border illegally are often called "children". Those stories are not usually from right-leaning sources.

Other than that you made a good point.

He has acting and filming experience.

He taught her the acting for the speech and the reason he isn't in photos is he is behind the camera filming the documentary for Cannes

Your inside knowledge of this girl and her family is quite phenomenal. Is your source confidential, or could you let us know how you are able to provide all this info as fact?

My source for that bit of inside info is deeply trustworthy

His name is Mr "Cullennz imagination trying make what is probably a not funny joke"

I trust him with my life

Actually I wouldn't be particularly surprised if a documentary were being filmed, given her family's background in show business. Of all the things cullennz has said in this thread, this might be one of the most reasonable.

Okay, she has poor language skills. So what?

Ask that of all the supplicants who have been arguing that she doesn't, based on this particular press release.

Yes, that explains her logistical inability to attend an award ceremony. That's one reason why she's not going to accept the award.
No, that's one reason to not attend the ceremony.
Why would it be a reason to not accept the award?

She goes on immediately after your selective quote to give another reason. Two reasons, in total.

Being in California was not a reason to not accept the award.
It was a reason for not attending the ceremony.

A coherent statement would have began:
" I have decided to decline the invitation to attend this ceremony . Here’s why: I am currently traveling through California and therefore not able to be present with you today. I want to thank the Nordic Council for this award. It is a huge honour.

I have also decided not to accept this prize. Here's why: (.. all that follows.)"

Being unable to attend the ceremony is a reason for not accepting the award. Not wanting to is another.

I don't know how I can make this clearer.

Not wanting to is much more important than not being able to. So much so that it's bad communication to bring "unable to" into the conversation at all. Like I said. Her actual reason makes sense, but she needs an editor.

Anyway, what happened to not complaining about unimportant stuff?

Greta writes:

‪So COP25 will not be held in Santiago.‬
‪My thoughts are with the people of Chile.‬
‪I’ve been making my way through the North American continent towards Santiago, but as #COP25 will be moved I will now wait until I have more information...‬

There's a moral question, relating to the survival of humanity, in accepting or not accepting the award. A good editor would have understood that the logistical issue is completely insignificant, compared to the moral issue, and shortened the statement to something more direct and impactful.

"I won't accept this award, and here's why: It's morally wrong. It's wrong for these reasons [...] And also I'm in California and can't make the award ceremony anyway."
