Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

i wonder how many people are driven away from her message based on her irritating delivery..

I know a lot of people who voted for a clown for President, mostly because his opponent was so damn irritating..

Thunberg just needs a little help in making the right decision. She says it's easy to moderate content on Facebook yet "controversial" content somehow still makes it through after these years of complaints.

She doesn't really need Facebook anyway, neither does her family. The only reason they have it is because Facebook's marketing department has convinced them that they do. Thunberg chides people for being "afraid of being unpopular and to make uncomfortable decisions".

This should be a slam dunk. Pull the plug on social media.

From what I've seen her by far greatest impact has been in Germany, but that is already fading while the English-speaking countries are worked now. Her more extreme cousins of "Extinction Rebellion" (for whose extremism she can't be blamed) seem to get quite robust backlash even in their homebase UK and fail to attract large numbers of people outside of it.

The gap between what the science says is needed to limit the increase of global temperature rise to below 1,5 or even 2 degrees - and politics that run the Nordic countries is gigantic. And there are still no signs whatsoever of the changes required.
The Paris Agreement, which all of the Nordic countries have signed, is based on the aspect of equity, which means that richer countries must lead the way.

We belong to the countries that have the possibility to do the most. And yet our countries still basically do nothing. So until you start to act in accordance with what the science says is needed to limit the global temperature rise below 1,5 degrees or even 2 degrees celsius, I - and Fridays For Future in Sweden - choose not to accept the Nordic Councils environmental award nor the prize money of 500 000 Swedish kronor.

I understand and respect her decision not to accept this award. However, she needs a good copy editor. This:

Followed by several paragraphs developing an entirely different (and much more meaningful) reason for declining, is bad writing.

At a guess it is probably because she would have wrote the first bit, then her PR people wrote the rest.

Her thoughts appear to be very well organized. English being her second language would have something to do with the issue you have. Also assuming that the reason given ends at the next period when it clearly doesn't.

Truth be told she writes better than a lot of native English speakers on this forum.

Indeed, and the small European countries have that advantage that not only their school classes are very good, but that it isn't financially possible for their media outlets to dub cultural imperialism products. They get subtitles if they are lucky, which makes them very good at the language like many of our forum friends from Sweden, Finland, Netherlands etc, while larger audiences like German or Spanish get full dubs of the crap. And the French, well you get the point.

The level of fail by some natives here is really shocking, though. Sez me from Gerrrmany.

1. What does traveling in California have to do with accepting the prize?

2. She claims the prize is a great honor.

3. She condemns the Nordic countries for doing nothing to solve the problem, and offers this as the reason for not accepting the prize..


Number three is a good reason for declining the prize..

Number one makes no sense..


This might be a reason to find fault with the piece as written..

Presumably the award ceremony was going to be occurring in California, and it was not practical given her schedule to suddenly detour so far (she's in Canada right now) to accept the award. Really, is that such a difficult conclusion to draw?

And the "cheerleading" :rolleyes: is merely an observation about the comparison between the article and the word salad we see regularly on this forum.

"Genuflecting"? Hyperbole, much?

She's out there, boots on the ground, spreading the message loudly and clearly. More loudly and clearly, in fact, than anyone else in this time. She's being the change she wants to see in the world. That alone is an admirable trait.
