Has any journalist ever taken him to task for his lying?

Not that I recall, but Boris Johnson works from the President Trump playbook, he has no memory and no shame and so bringing up his lies doesn't really bother him.

Unlike Donald Trump he's also reasonably eloquent and for the uninitiated sounds relatively erudite when he engages in one of his stream of consciousness rambled explanations peppered with Latin and/or Greek tags. :(

And it's a bit of a stretch to call Jeremy Corbyn a "Remain supporting politician."

Dave

True.

Over the last three decades he's been more consistently and vehemently anti-EU than most of the Conservative Party, including the last three Conservative Prime Ministers. Indeed, ERG aside, I can't think of too many Conservatives who have been so resolutely anti-EU.

How about all the Remain supporting politicians, including the Prime Minister and Chancellor at the time, plus Corbyn himself, who all promised sincerely that the referendum would NOT be rerun, and that it would be a once in a generation event?

That was before they LOST of course, since when they have been shown to be the complete liars that they are.

what about them?

everyone has learned a lot since then.
Just because everyone was an idiot three years ago doesn't mean that everyone has to stick to a commitments made by those idiots.

People, when given the chance, can learn.

Deciding what may or may not be debated seems to be an extraordinary power the speaker has.

As I understand it, in the Australian parliament, a member would make a proposal in the form of "I seek leave to . . ." and the speaker then asks the house "Is leave granted?"

If the standing orders (rules which govern parliament) get in the way of some debate then a member may propose suspending standing orders - something which the speaker again asks the house to approve.

Well the speaker is there to enforce the rules and the rules say you can't bring the same thing to Parliament twice in the same session.

I believe the rules could be changed but that would have to be approved by Parliament and despite much bumping of gums nobody seems to have actually asked for the rules to be changed - they have only complained about the speaker implementing them.

It's a good thing that parliament aren't allowed to debate the same thing twice. Were it not for this rigidly enforced rule, we might have had the situation where the same old arguments about Brexit would have been repeated over and over again for the last three years.

You're right, Theresa May shouldn't have kept banging on at the same deal over and over again, but instead should have worked towards trying to find a solution that everybody could agree to.

The Tories have really ****** this all up, haven't they?

Any move to suspend the rules is just put directly to the parliament. It is not debated.

In the UK case, the speaker gets to decide whether to enforce the rules or not instead of parliament.

Strangely I find Trump far easier to understand and believe.
And he has a far bigger sand pit.
I have way more respect for Trump without respecting him.

He goes by rules and protocols. There are standing orders and byelaws and the speaker has a team of clerks who advise him, although on television it might look as though he's a one-band band.

That seems like a system that would be very open to abuse if anyone with a majority can simply suspend the rules of the parliament so easily

The speaker doesn't get to decide whether to enforce the rules or not, he implements the rules that exist as he seems them.
