2020 Democratic Candidates Tracker - Part II

Ah, but you're overlooking one thing: the shrill, mindless crapulence of Republicans. No matter who the Democrat candidate is the right will declare them the second coming of Lenin. So since the Dem is going to get that treatment anyway, why not go ahead and make it a good one? Why bother trying to compromise when the other side is determined in advance to reject all compromise?
Because there is a "Middle".

When the right tries to paint Sanders as the second coming of Lenin it will ring "mostly true" with the moderates.

When they try to paint Buttigieg with the same brush it will register as "pants on fire", and cost them credibility and votes.

Thanks, I needed a good laugh on a Monday morning. I think it's absolutely adorable that people still believe there's a middle. Really, it's super cute.

I'm of two minds about this.

Part of me sees why there could be an appeal to someone like Buttigieg. Some middle of the road, bland nobody that won't make any waves. After 4 years of Trump craziness, a boring middle manager type seems like returning to normalcy.

part of me also recalls that there is tremendous sense of populist agitation and general uneasiness in the population. Trump was largely successful because he openly acknowledged the poor state of things and made bold proposals to deal with it. Of course, being a right-wing authoritarian, his solutions involve lots of regressive, bigoted nonsense, but it's a proposal.

Running someone like HRC is almost a repudiation of the sense that there is something deeply wrong in our society. Buttigieg would be like putting pretty wallpaper over a giant crack in the wall due to a sagging foundation. Just pretend the problems don't exist.

Running a status-quo politician in a time where it is becomingly increasingly clear our systems are failing is a mistake.

Campaigning is then, in your opinion, nothing more than an excercise in motivating the base?

I'd say it's more like prostitutes crying their wares. To be successful they have to appeal to the tastes of their prospective customers. If a customer prefers hefty male prostitutes he's not going to accept a slender female prostitute even when she tries to heighten her appeal by wearing a fake beard. And of course the fake beard will drive off many of her usual customers.

Without winning the general election, a candidates' promises, temperament, and ideas count for squat.

Again all of this goes away if we just don't pretend that the Left to Right political spectrum is some ingrained law of the universe like the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Not everything in politics is (or at least should be) about where it charts on "Full Donkey to Complete Elephant."

The Dems objectively and provably have stances and policies that are supported by a majority of Americans. If they could just like... push those with some balls instead of freaking out about their pet projects like a kid that got too much sugar every time they get the smallest amount of power they would be unbeatable.

That presupposes that there are customers to be had that are not her "usuals". "Moderate" Johns, who might choose either corner to get their satisfaction.

"But the moral victory and if we sacrifice our standards we are no better and who even wants their dirty racist votes anyway and and and and...."

I don't believe there are many Moderate Johns. I think appealing to them is as wasteful as building a birdhouse designed for wild pterodactyls.

Imagine how much money campaigns could safe if they just outbid each other on buying the votes of the Undecided directly.
And the rest of us would be spared the ads.

So... what exactly is the plan if there aren't enough people on your side?

I don't have a plan. I'm not a politician so I'm neither running for office nor coordinating a strategy for those who are. Like the vast majority of everybody I'm just a spectator.

Good God, I know some here take themselves awfully seriously but do try to remember we're all just random bozos talking online, we're not masterminding the schemes within the corridors of power!
