The Trump Presidency: Part 17

It's a meme among Republicans that they don't say properly "Democratic Party". I don't know why they insist on that, it's rather stupid. But then, so were "Freedom Fries".

They do it to irritate democrats. Trolling, basically.

Trolling is part of it, but the bigger part is that when you rename something, you get to redefine it. Basic Orwell. Then your followers only have one source for what that thing is, because only their side is talking about it. Look at how many people hate Obamacare but love the ACA. Hate Entitelments but keep your hands off my medicare!

When they rename something and start villifying it, the dumbest chunk of their base literally don't identify the new and original name as the same thing. So nothing positive demcrats can say about whatever it is will land with those supporters. And even for those not quite that dumb, the new term primes a strong emotional reaction and makes it difficult to psychologically connect the two terms.

It is deliberate, it is more than trolling and it is incredibly effective.

Just out: MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME IS AT THE HIGHEST POINT EVER, EVER, EVER! How about saying it this way, IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY! Also, MORE PEOPLE WORKING TODAY IN THE USA THAN AT ANY TIME IN HISTORY! Tough numbers for the Radical Left Democrats to beat! Impeach the Pres.

Is there a long tail on the distribution curve?

Waitwaitwait,

Last line, was he reaching for “Impeach the press,” and didn’t finish? Or is he calling for his own impeachment? Or the impeachment of Schiff?

He definitely is not smart or literate enough to be going for a disgruntled or incredulous astonishment.

- I've never understood the Democrat Party v Democratic Party issue. It's the "It's Canada Geese not Canadian Geese!" thing.

- The Democratic Party needs an abbreviation like GOP. If the Republicans are the Grand Old Party I propose FNP for the Democratics, the Fresh New Party.

Is there a long tail on the distribution curve?
Bingo.

I recall a quote from Mark Blyth: "nobody lives in an average."

All telling people who's wages are flat or stagnant that average incoming is going up does is piss them off even more (feels like losing relative position).

Been awhile since I've seen it, but I went and checked.
It was hardly played as a fun scene. The character and the church members are made homicidal by the chip, and he's horrified afterwards.
Dunno if that's a por moment by Cain or he just missed that scene.

This is nonsense. Nobody disputes the chip triggers a homicidal rage. The claim was they're saying racist/homophobic things because of the chip. And it's supposed to be a fun scene that people revel in and revisit; it's the most iconic scene in the film.

Yes, the protagonist is horrified by the violence afterward, but viewers are supposed to think, "That was AWESOME!" It's video-game carnage, not dramatic self-reflection.

"When ever you are discussing statistical averages never forget, the average person has one ovary and one testicle but nobody actually has one ovary and one testicle." - a quote on the need for context when discussing statistics from VSauce.

Really? I thought for sure the "manners maketh man" would have been the most iconic scene.

I won't argue with this much more though. I just view it differently, which is ok. Something I think we forget around here sometimes.

Since they were using the 'median' income (rather than average) values at the edges shouldn't have had that much of an effect.

I am willing to accept that Median household income has risen lately. However, it is a trend that started years ago, and has been growing pretty steadily since mid-way through Obama's presidency.

So just like pretty much everything else about Trump's economic "success", he had the good fortune of inheriting certain positive trends, and despite his many foolish actions (starting trade wars, exploding the deficit) he has manage to not screw up enough to actually reverse the trends.

That is exactly what I say.

Show me any one of those great economic indicators that Trump likes to spew and show me something that actually happened after he was elected due to something he did, and not just a continuation of a trend that started when Obama was president?

I like "the antidemocratic party" for the Republicans

I wish the two major parties had picked names other then the broadest terms for basic government building structures of our governmental system.

It's not as bad as the abortion debate trying to own the terms "Life" and "Choice" but it's close.

Off topic, but you are both wrong. The most iconic scene was the "Pomp and Circumstance" bit near the end.

Trump's also engaging in a pretty extreme form of this:

It's probably the least useful/productive/efficient form of government spending out there, but it does have some effect.

Now that we have found out that @CNN is a virtual fraud, rumor has it that Jeff Zucker will be resigining momentarily?

Just abbreviate based on the name, call it the DP. Let me do a quick search for DP to make sure it isn't in use...

Nevermind, FNP is better.

Must be why they've been having such a hard time just saying "democratic" lately.

They do it because Frank Luntz held a focus group and people thought the name was more negative than Democratic Party. They repeated the talking point deliberately until reporters and others began using it regularly.
