The Trump Presidency: Part 17

The White House has said President Trump “strongly condemns” the gruesome fake video depicting him shooting members of the news media and political rivals.

No he hasn't otherwise one of his dozens of tweets or retweets would have mentioned it.

The people watching it take place were absolutely mortified as well, and the way I watched the scene the church-goers weren't under their own control when those things were said. The cell phone hate chips are what caused them to act that way.

I can't easily find a clip online showing the context. If the chip had been activated, then it was at a mild level, not unlike having a few drinks. The violence does not occur until it's cranked up. Even still, there's no story-reason to stage that scene in a sort of Westboro Baptist church. The viewer is supposed to derive joy out of seeing those people get slaughtered. Trump's meme-makers simply flipped the script.

Trump Tweets

Somebody please explain to Chris Wallace of Fox, who will never be his father (and my friend), Mike Wallace,.... <snip>

Somebody please explain to Major Bonespurs that his friend Mike Wallace partially earned his chops by investigating corruption and, in fact, lost his prominence in a case involving whether a sitting president improperly avoided serving in Vietnam.

Jesus, Hollywood producers would reject as too fantastical any script containing a similar scenario.

???? Are you confusing Mike Wallace with Dan Rather?

I'm feeling really bad about the Kurds beyond it being just one in a looooong line of Trump eff ups. People who live a hard-scrabble life anyway and being forced to flee to ... where. Is any place in Syria really safe? Worse, so many are dying who are innocent of anything except being in an ethnic minority. Kids who don't get killed are probably traumatized with more than a few growing up to be radicals themselves. All for naught. It's just sickening.

And ISIS will probably be able to more or less regroup and also recruit more killers. Thus, the echos of Trump's dreadful foreign actions (I refuse to call them "policies") will reverberate certainly in Europe and possibly in the USA and elsewhere.

Of course, USA leadership in international affairs in shot. After this, suppose we have another situation like Gulf War I where Papa Bush built a coalition of the willing to oppose Saddam Hussein. Are nations now going to trust us to lead the good fight? No way. This abandonment of our allies to predictable slaughter will hinder our efforts for at least a generation.

I'm so saddened by the whole thing. As I sit here in peace and quiet, people are getting killed, raped and driven from their homes because of my president. I'm just at a loss for words ...

This tweet leaves me no doubt that farmers, at least the smaller ones, are still screwed. First off, tariffs remain at 25 percent. Second, the Chinese are FAR smarter than Trump; they would not do this without major concessions and someone should find out what those are. Third, Trump lies a lot, so whether any of this is true is questionable. Show us the invoices. Fourth, China has already changed its suppliers and will wants to maintain those relationships because Trump is unreliable. There's more but this will do for now.

Meanwhile what has Trump conceded? Probably a pledge to turn a blind eye to Hong Kong protesters and also to the crackdown on Muslims and Christians. The Muslims have it worse but Christians are also in the crosshairs. U.S. evangelicals are probably already on this, but maybe someone should amplify this message on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. It probably wouldn't require fake news, though that would be tempting as well.

At last check, China doesn't think that any actual agreement has actually been made yet, apparently. I hear they want another round of talks, at least.

Jeff T:mister president sir, why is Turkey dictating US foreign policy? asking for 65 million friends and more than a few formerly-breathing Kurds

Well... if you want a 'slightly' less traitorous reason...

U.S. military keeps 50 nuclear weapons on Turkish airbase, and now they're 'Erdogan's hostages'

OK, he's still fixated on the whistleblower's ID which is IMO kind of strange,

Remember, this guy is pretty much acting like a mob boss. Once you recognize that, it's really, really not strange.

and I think even a lot of Trump supporters aren't too hung up on this detail. P!us, he keeps yammering on about Schiff's comments as if he's afraid people will really believe he was being quoted verbatim. It says a lot about his opinion of "the base," or maybe it's Trump who is completely baffled by satirical flourishes. He thinks hyperbole is libel. So keep it up; it's fun to watch his meltdown.

It's not that he's afraid that people will really believe that he was being quoted verbatim. He's loudly lying to 1) confuse people who really haven't been paying much attention (that's still probably most of the population, especially in his base), 2) badmouth Schiff and the Democrats (which also pushes the us vs them extreme partisanship angle, and that's especially effective on the current set of Republicans) and 3) doing that thing that 1984 is famous for.

Anyways... other random bits of news.

Research continues to show immigrants boost communities and businesses—including Trump's

Anyone surprised at the obvious?

Pompeo is openly advertising Christianity via the State Department

Separation of Church and State, anyone? ******* Dominionists.

3 economists, including the second woman ever, win Nobel Prize for research on global poverty

Yay for steps forward.

Liz Cheney blames slaughter of Kurds on ... Democrats

Yup. Cheney's still as much of a partisan hack as ever.

Looks like Fiona Hill has made quite the splash, when it comes to her testimony related to the Ukraine plot.

There's a bunch, frankly, but there's one thing that really stood out to me. In response to the White House trying to invoke executive privilege to silence her...

“The deliberative process privilege disappears altogether when there is any reason to believe government misconduct occurred.”

Friggin' finally! Some actual pushback against that utter BS abuse of executive privilege!

Trump would probably be convicted in the Senate if it turns out that he got a personal benefit from withdrawing from North Syria.

Republicans are panicking because Trump is undermining their connection to a core constituency: the Military.
They want to be on record for not supporting Trump on this.
Time and again Trump has seriously alienated the Troops and Generals with unkept promises, obvious ignorance and petty attacks.
In the past. the GOP has managed to label the Dems as the 'Party disrespecting the Troops' - they don't want to inherit that mantel.

*shrug* I wasn't a huge fan of the movie, for some of the reasons you said. I was just saying how I viewed it. I didn't see it as a bunch of racist homophobes got what they deserved. I saw it as a bunch of people under the influence of a hate machine said terrible things and some of them snapped.

It wasn't just the main character killing the church people, they were slaughtering each other as well.

Been awhile since I've seen it, but I went and checked.
It was hardly played as a fun scene. The character and the church members are made homicidal by the chip, and he's horrified afterwards.
Dunno if that's a por moment by Cain or he just missed that scene.

It is being reported that back in 2014, President Trump wanted to release his taxes. People who talked to him at that time said that he thought the released returns would improve his image because when people saw how little he paid, they would view him as a savvy businessman.

Tell me again about his 3-D chess skills.

Ferengi.
I forgot to add the Ferengi to the list of fictional characters who best represent President Trump. This is an entire society based on unbridled capitalism and extreme sexism (women cannot own property and cannot wear clothes).

Minor correction - 2013.

I wonder how he would have reacted if it had been shown by people he regards as his opponents.
