The bullfighter boyfriend of a Spanish royal is ‘gravely ill’ after being gored in the thigh and groin.

Matador Gonzalo Caballero, 27, was injured during a tournament to mark Hispanic Day in Madrid’s Las Ventas bullring and is in a very ‘serious condition’ after the bull’s horn punctured a vital vein.

He is the boyfriend of Victoria Federica, 19, niece of the King of Spain, who watched on in horror from the VIP area on a Spanish day of national celebrations.

Caballero clutched his crotch as he was taken from the bullring in an effort to curb the prolific bleeding.

He was operated in the infirmary for more than two hours and then transferred to a medical centre.

If he survives, maybe he should find a different line of work.

The pix I saw on FB appeared to show a blood-slick bull (that torturing I mentioned) with the specialised sword they use hilt-deep in his body.

So maybe he gored that pomaded creep while dying. Hope so.

The bulls don't always die quickly. They can lie there groaning while the aficioladrones -- what? Mark their scorecards? Settle bets? Finish their circle jerk?

Traditionally, the matador is awarded for daring, not common sense or good health. And an ear is a minimal trofeo as those things go.

According to Wikipedia: "Most matadors have been gored many times." So apparently it's not a shameful failure that ends a matador's career.

The cynic in me suggests a 19 year old princess won't have much trouble finding a replacement for a 27 year old boyfriend with a severe groin injury. He looked okay in the photos but I can't imagine she can't do better. Doesn't Spain have a fairly good soccer team or two? Those guys are bound to have just as good if not better bodies than matadors, with the added bonus of probably not so many bovine-related groin gorings.

Granted, there can be significant injuries that can happen regardless, but I have to say, I presume he was at least wearing a protective cup.

If he wasn't wearing a cup, then there isn't much more I can say. It's one thing to participate in risky activities, but in doing so, at least use proper safety equipment.
