The Trump Presidency: Part 17

Trump press conference today

TRUMP: "When I took over our military, we did not have ammunition. I was told by a top general, maybe the top of them all, 'Sir, I'm sorry sir, we don't have ammunition.' I said, I will never let that happen to another president."

Ukraine is known as a very corrupt country. One of the most in the world. Shockingly, because I know Ukrainian people. It's surprising to me.

Trump claims his poll numbers have increased "17 points in the last two or three days."

I suppose it depends on what polls he's looking at.

If he saw a Gallup poll two or three days ago and a Rasmussen poll today then that's quite possible.

He could of course just be making stuff up - it's not unprecedented.

edited to add....

Here's the #fakenews take on it

In a fractured White House news conference Monday, President Donald Trump claimed poll numbers supporting him have jumped 17 percentage points. That’s despite an impeachment inquiry and the uproar over his decision Sunday night to draw down U.S. troops as Kurdish allies face a Turkish incursion into Syria.

It’s not known which poll, if any, Trump was citing.

It's probably as reliable and as well evidenced as another claim he made in that same press conference:

“When I took over our military, we didn’t have ammunition,” he explained. “I was told by a top general, maybe the top of them all: ‘Sir, I’m sorry, sir, we don’t have ammunition.’ I said, ‘I will never let another president have that happen to him or her. We didn’t have ammunition.’”

Even Gallup and Rasmussen aren't that far apart. The only polls I have seen lately with that kind of increase are support for Impeachment ones.

You're right :o.

I was thinking of a couple of weeks ago when Rasmussen had him at 53% approval and other polls had him below 40%

I believe Trump told the Pentagon to remove the troops and they said, essentially, no.
So Trump starts issuing his orders via Twitter, thinking that the DOD would have no choice but to leave Syria.
And then they said: we'll bring back those who are going to leave on rotation anyway, call it what you like.

Seems unlikely to me that the military would refuse a lawful order like that.

is an order via twitter lawful?
is one via phone when you know that the President tends to have his mind changed five times a day?

As the Pentagon has declared a couple of times, unless they get clear written orders, they ignore what the President says.

I thought you said Trump told the Pentagon to do this and the Pentagon refused, so Trump then went to Twitter. Did I misread you?

I guess we know now what documents Trump's bodyguard took form his doctor's office...

He seems to be on some sort of "downer" at other times, too. Some sort of benzo, *I'd guess.

*I'm not a doc. Just have had addict friends over the years.

Trump also ordered the TransBan, but the Pentagon just ignored it until White House lawyers wrote it up nice and tidy.

The Opening Arguments podcast also had a deep dive into hearsay - what it is and what it isn’t’. Worth a listen.

Yeah, but what it is in this case is irrelevant since the incriminating details have already been confirmed -- no reason to bring the complaint into any legal argument except for context.

The military has been signaling for quite a while that they don't consider him commander in chief.

The first time I noticed it was here:

Later, while Trump was going all over Europe saying we were bailing out of NATO, the Navy tweeted:

Alliances with our
@NATO
partners remains a crucial element in maintaining global security in order to deter, defend, and win against our adversaries. #NavyLethality #Partnerships #SeaBreeze

Check out the comments.

I know nothing should shock or surprise us anymore, but the U.S. Navy implicitly contradicting their commander in chief in a highly public forum is still shocking.

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same;

Is the Navy now oart@Of the deep state?

Several of the deleted comments were along the lines of "Never thought I'd be happy to see some sort of soft military coup in the US, but here we are."
