The Trump Presidency: Part 17

Rand Paul is an out and out isolationist.
Yes, but somewhat to his credit he is at least consistent. What I’m not getting is why Graham and McConnell are bothering to speak up. This is Trump, this is their guy, who is today’s indignation supposed to be aimed at? Not Trump’s base, obviously. Israel? The mainstream new media? The U.S. military? I am genuinely baffled.

Think about the message it sends Russia and Ukraine! Help yourself, Vlad, we’re certainly not going to stand in your way! Ukraine’s leaders might as well divert U.S. aid into their own pockets - because no way can they expect U.S. help to protect their borders. Why does this surprise anyone, least of all the GOP Senate?

Actually there have a few since Jesus Christ who have claimed that title, but it did not end well for them, either.

But them of course I remember Steve Bannon, during his days at the White House, said he was "Trump's Thomas Cromwell" ie, his right hand man.
Bannon forgot what happened to Cromwell in the end; he got the same "Henry the Eight Experience" had had help arrange for Thomas More and Anne Boelyn.

Now reports that Donnie might do a 180 on Syria...but no confirmation.
So maybe his "great and unmatched wisdom" is not so great and unmatched?

That would be just like him. Manufacture a day’s distraction, then backtrack.

I’m very confused about what’s actually involved in Syria. Trump said much the same thing last year, but what actually changed? Except that Mattis resigned.

Trump has no policy, just whims of the moment.

Which is why I’m trying to understand the rationale behind this announcement. Trial balloon to see how far he can push GOP senators? And ... what could have possibly transpired during that phone call with Erdogan? Trump must have thought there was some upside to announcing this but I’m mystified what he thinks that is. Was Pompeo on this phone call, as well?

Trump has the memory of a goldfish. He probably forgot everything his advisers tried to educate him of and was convinced that conpletely abandoning Syria to Iran, Turkey and Russia was a good thing. They could take responsibility for all of that. America has done so much for the world and it's about time everyone else paid the bills.

Paul Krugman lists 3 reasons for Trump's decision on Syria.none of them good"
1. He has business interests in Turkey and hopes for favors from Erdogan.
2. Erdogan is a right wing dictator, Trump's kind of guy.
3, Just doing what his boss Putin is telling him to do.

4. Erdogan has told Donny he has something on the Bidens.

... and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the...

It’s so sad to see once-functioning people progress through the different stages of addiction. Whether their fix is cocaine or attention, they need more and more just to make it through the day. Eventually, they turn to crime just to support their addiction. So sad.

He’s probably not going to do a damn thing anyway.

I need to find a good timeline on U.S. involvement in Syria; I’m finding it very difficult to understand basic facts.

trump tweets:

"As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over...
....the captured ISIS fighters and families. The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100% of the ISIS Caliphate. It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!"

yeah, you guys are great.

What is especially disgusting about this tweet is that after stabbing the Kurds in the back, he wants to take credit for what was largely accomplished by the Kurds.

I posted earlier that the US will never be trusted again until Trump is gone, I read an analysis that paints an even more disturbing and depressing picture: Trumps behavior will be used by anti-democracy forces around the world to argue that democracy is inherently corrupt, that its principles are hypocritical propaganda, that it leads to chaos, and that democratic governments cannot be trusted. In other words, Trump being gone is not enough; he must be held accountable for his corruption, or our nation and democracy itself will suffer for a very long time.

Very true. I doubt that there is a government anywhere that currently trusts the US. Some are smart enough to use Trump as a useful idiot, the rest just try to stay far away. The US has problems now - if Trump is re-elected the trust of the rest of the world may not be regained in the lifetime of any adults alive today.

Nonsense! Trump has never been functioning!

Still wouldn't work.

After the entire century to date spent seeing USA bomb indiscriminate targets, support evil dictatorships and Israel, while still interfering in Central America, Trump is just the latest manifestation of American arrogance and it will take a lot more than his downfall, and even imprisonment, to change the opinions of the wider world.
