2020 Democratic Candidates Tracker - Part II

Does it involve being rendered unconscious by a general anesthetic and thus temporarily invoking the 25th? About 300 million brain stems are wondering that right now and there's nothing you or I or anyone else can really do about that.

ETA: I mean even if not, it's not like you want a President laying there during procedure and someone has to tell them WW3 has started. I bet that will both complicate the procedure (when a sudden spike of adrenaline hits) and there's still little they could do to effectively command the situation unless the operating room was upgraded so that it can serve as a secure communications center (could have a negative impact on the sterile environment thing...).
And yet you support the mentally ill 70+ year old Trump?

Perhaps I'm misreading your post.

If Travis' link a couple dozen pages back is to be believed, a significant chunk of current Sanders supporters would switch to Trump or abstain if he dropped out.

Holy cow, though I guess you can attribute some of that to independents or conservatives who are on the Bernie train, but those were some serious numbers, something like 25% of 2019 Sanders supporters? I don't know if I believe it.
I'm guessing that "significant chunk" is about 3 people.

Sweet jeebus! I'm at about 12:00 noon on the 3rd, so it's about midnight in Fantasy Acres. What are the odds:

> A guy looking suspiciously like James O'Keefe shows up in a Hans-and-Franz muscle suit and claims he's the paramour.
> The informant was frightened away by Democratic criminals but left proof in Al Capone's vault. Hannity and Rivera agree to cover the opening of the vault on a PPV special hosted by Tia Tequila.
> Wohl trips over Burkman because there's no room for the two reporters (from Guns 'n Ammo weekly and The Onion) on the stoop.
> A garbage truck drowns out what they are saying.
:sdl:

I do love your humor.

I would - sour grapes is a strong motivator.

Believe it or not, presidents have had surgery done on themselves during their term of office that have sometimes required them to be knocked out during the operation. There are well-established procedures for handling the situation.

And to be honest, if it's President Bernie Sanders, I have a tough time believing the VP could possibly be worse prepared.

What's he running at lately, like 12%? That means 3% of the Democrats might support Trump if Bernie isn't the nominee? I could buy that, especially the hard-core union guys who hate free trade. Keep in mind that the TPP would have been passed by now if Hillary had been elected (with some superficial changes to allow her to claim that it was again the gold standard on trade). Under Trump it's dead, and while a free trader like me is going to think that is a missed opportunity, I suspect you won't find many free traders in union halls.

It has happened 3 times. For planned procedures.

Besides, the larger point is now getting missed. These are not problems you want to have to deal with at all, no matter how well thought-out the plan is. Right or wrong, people will now worry about it.

There are certainly some very big issues with the top-tier candidates being from the Geritol generation. Whether it's in the primaries or in the general you are voting for one person. To give a simple example, suppose last time around Hillary had a fatal heart attack shortly after the DNC, and Tim Kaine became the nominee. You know how it is, the Democrats probably would have made a strong effort to fall in love with him, but he would have been nobody's choice.

And the odds of that happening get higher and higher the older the candidates get. It may not happen this time around but it will happen eventually.

Personal anecdote. I was second cousin to a local politician, which meant that I did get a summer job for which I probably didn't quite qualify. He was a freeholder in our county (essentially a county supervisor). But a few years before that, he suffered a rather ignominious fate. He was running for the mayor of his town. But he was a Democrat and the town was heavily Republican, so it was obvious he was headed for a drubbing.

And then the GOP candidate died suddenly, and it looked like my second cousin would win. But the Republican town council got out the word that there was a provision for this in the town's charter; if the mayor died or became incapacitated, the council would choose a successor. Which of course meant that the council would choose another Republican. And so my second cousin became known as the guy who lost an election to a dead man.

Like I said, he rebounded and became a pretty big wheel.

Indeed one of the few things that irritated me about Sanders is his free trade views.

Seems to be an extension of his anti corporate theme. Seems pretty popular though.

I assume you mean Bernie's anti-free trade views? Which are apparently unpopular?

I think hate-voting against Trump is enough to drive most lefties to the polls. Sure, it would be nice if they got a candidate they liked, but not strictly necessary.

I think most Bernie bros would find Warren more than palatable. Biden perhaps less so, but the hate vote against Trump is a strong driver.

Bernie will live, the question is how much damage has this done to his campaign?
IMHO a lot. His electability in November quotient has just fell off a cliff...and all Democratic voters but the Berniebots will be closely looking at that.
No one really wanted to talk about Bernie's being 78 years old, but not his age..and his health...are a real issue, even if the other Caindidates don' t talk about it.

Yup. I can already hear Trump saying "You really wanna vote for this guy? He's dying and he hasn't even become President yet!!"

I don't know how common it was, but in 2008 my parents voted based on the Vice Presidential candidates. They assumed that John McCain was too old and sickly to endure the strain of being President and that Barack Obama would be assassinated if he won.

Well, don’t leave us in suspense. Who did they vote for as president? Joe Biden or Sarah Palin?

We don't talk about who we voted for, but I suspect Biden, although my father is a pretty died-in-the-wool racist, so that may have had a spillover effect.

Ronald Reagan got shot in the middle of cold war tensions and it didn't kick of an international crisis. I think we'll be alright if President Bernie gets the vapors.

You're going to try to reassure me be invoking an example where the proper procedures were not followed and people who knew they were not the proper procedures did not speak up?

Are you sure you want to do that?
