Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

Despite the fact that I don't entirely agree with everything she said I wish her well. She's troubled and it goes beyond her concern about global warming. I'm not familiar with Asperger's disorder. Is it a personality disorder?

Quite frankly I think she's being exploited by the naysayers.

Having said that I wish her well.

By the way, no one outside of North America cares at all about Al Gore. I'm willing to bet most people within North America don't even know who he is anymore. He isn't involved in climate science in any way. He's pretty irrelevant. Yet for some reason he's a sad obsession for some climate change denying conspiracy theorists. Perhaps you could explain why.

Really, An Inconvenient Truth wasn't all that long ago it was even released in Thungberg's lifetime. Maybe you slept through, or ignored it. Fear not, you're only a Wikipedia article away from bringing yourself up to speed on what you missed.

Thunberg isn't involved in climate science in any way and she too will soon become "irrelevant" once she's replaced by someone else.

I know about An Inconvenient Truth. I haven't seen it or the sequel because I'm a natural scientist and have been trained, and work, in this area. I haven't heard Greta Thunberg speak for the same reason; because I don't need to. But making a couple of documentaries has apparently turned him into a kind of 'anti-Christ' figure for some of you. Pointing out that Al Gore is not involved in climate science is about me wondering why he's considered to be so important by some people, when he really isn't.

On the other hand Thunberg not being involved in climate science is irrelevant because her point has always been "Listen to the scientists," not "Listen to me."

there are always some people who feel the need to pass on the lastest narrative from certain disreputable propaganda sources.

Because it must not be clear, the coordinated climate denier network spreads disinfo that other climate deniers repeat. That's how social media propaganda campaigns work.

Anything to keep the debate going. The rightites are now posting sheer insanity in order for the discussion not to settle on an outcome.

And everything is a ******* culture war. The right wing in the US has really messed up everything.

If you feel the need to attack Greta, you are a poor excuse for a human being. Now all of you stand in a corner and think about what you did.

So instead of school strikes get those kids into more school to become the generation that stops the damage, intelligently. Teach them to become the scientists and engineers that make an eco friendly future.

If the political systems if now can't or won't, those of the future can and should once they have the technology to replace what we use now.

If schooling is so effective, how come we're in this mess to begin with?

Remember: The generations that got us into this mess are the same generations that preside over the schools you're talking about.

That's a bit of a cop out. :boggled:

The science is here, the solutions are known, what we need is for the deniers, especially those with power, to stop denying there's a problem and take action.

The kids are taking action.

That's pretty much what Greta says. It's amazing how so many people come out to criticize Greta by making the same points she's making.

And having done so, the impression I have formed is that she is an intelligent, articulate, well-informed young lady who has done her research and is asking people to listen to the scientists who are telling us that the time to do something substantial is now. If it isn't already too late.
...
Of course - we all know that Scientists - not least Climate Scientists - are selected not just because they're really, really smart, but also for their unique uncorruptibility - unlike the hoipoloi, a Scientist would never whore themselves for a fat, juicy research grant, or a well-paid, cozy, tenured professorship.

The UN, for example. Thunberg says, listen to the scientists.

So naturally the UN schedules time to listen to Thunberg.

Why don't they just listen to the scientists, like Thunberg says?

And if Thunberg is so smart (or wise, or whatever), why can't she see that the UN has turned her into a distraction from her own message?

Especially when they get a fat, juicy research grant for studying the collective works of Billy ******* Shakespeare! Am I right?

In before we're sent off to AAH.

That's a minority opinion. Most people are moved by her speeches.

Didn't this come up already, MLK, Gandhi, and other misc great leaders performed similar roles though Greta isn't on that same level at this point.

Of course it's not a surprise to hear this over and over. There are also people in the thread who are bringing up the very stale argument that 1% of climate denier scientists on Exxon's payroll should be given equal 'listen to them' time.

What is it we should be settling on?

What Planet are you from?

The right wing in the US has really messed up everything.

Without the right wing. there would be no left..

What do you suggest? Fascism? Communism ?

If you feel the need to attack Greta, you are a poor excuse for a human being. Now all of you stand in a corner and think about what you did.

Wahhhh... Someone disagrees with you...

Why is criticism necessarily an attack?

The UN is the organisation coordinating the publishing of the IPCC reports. That is a massive task.

That climate change is real, caused by humans, a huge problem that we need to deal with immediately, and that saying so and "listen to the scientists" isn't cause for criticism.

You must be thinking about somewhere else where people are arguing against those things..

I don't think you're stupid enough to actually have to ask that question.

I don't think you're stupid enough to not have a coherent answer for that question..
