Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

Not open for further replies.
It hasn't really

When you look at earlier predictions.

Also based on modeling

It has. The predictions have been consistent. Read the IPCC reports, as Greta says, listen to the scientists.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPCC_First_Assessment_Report Looks good to me. Even the sea level rises turn out to more correct than later reports. The most recent report says that 60cm is expect by the end of this century after the most recent IPCC reports dropped that rise to lower levels.

Modeling is one of the major tools scientists have at their disposal these days. I don't know why you would even raise this as an issue.

Yeah, and then, after funding, it all just stops and scientists get to spend any money they have as they like and nobody checks anything and everything published is just accepted at face value. Oh, no,, hang on. That's absolutely not what happens.

Get back to me when you have the first clue what you're talking about.

Have a nice day.

No. This is why it is peer reviewed.

My slight issue here is you twisted my posts earlier, so I feel zero obligation to point out the stupidness of posts.

So I won't.

It is funny to read though.

If things are as you think they are then you should very easily be able to find dozens of papers on climate science that have been ripped to pieces during peer review.

Scientist lies to get funding, publishes overblown results to justify that funding, then gets peer reviewed. It's at that point that the check happens.

If your theory holds water it should be easily demonstrable, don't you think?

Either you're paranoid, because you think everyone is as duplicitous as everyone else (they're not) or you can easily show those climate scientists who have published inaccurate data and been pilloried. Up to you to show that though.

First paragraph, a few probably have, but AGW is happening so don't get your point. They would pass.

Second. They aren't lying. It is just a bit sex sells atm.

I may have been too broad. It isn't "everyone", but a lot.

Third

Never said anyone published inaccurate data, depending on how they want to analyse it

Look guys, we're about 5 posts from Climategate being drudged up. Could y'all please just stop the feeding? This thread isn't about cullenz's climate denial. It's about the foul right wing attacks on Greta Thunberg.

Fair enough.

Australia’s PM Scott Morrison was in the US at the time of Greta’s UN speech but didn’t have the guts to face her in the UN. He then came up with this crap.

https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2019...nge-anxiety-young-people/11546846?pfmredir=sm

Scott Morrison has warned against causing children "needless anxiety" about climate change and suggested Australian kids need to be given more "context and perspective" on the issue.

In other words, bury their heads in the sand.

Australia emits 1.2% of world carbon emissions, which doesn’t so bad until you consider that Australia has 0.3% of the world’s population. We also export 34% of the the world’s coal.

We have a shameful history of inaction and denial. A large number of young people participated in recent school strikes and marches. They are our hope for a decent future.

Yet Scott has no problem with telling children they will burn in hell if they don't give up their lives to jesus.

Speaking of which, here is Greta's Facebook post today:

"Here we go again... As you may have noticed, the haters are as active as ever - going after me, my looks, my clothes, my behaviour and my differences.
They come up with every thinkable lie and conspiracy theory. It seems they will cross every possible line to avert the focus, since they are so desperate not to talk about the climate and ecological crisis.

Being different is not an illness and the current, best available science is not opinions - it’s facts.

I honestly don’t understand why adults would choose to spend their time mocking and threatening teenagers and children for promoting science, when they could do something good instead. I guess they must simply feel so threatened by us.
But the world is waking up. See you in the streets this Friday!"

There is now. I just added it to improve the analogy somewhat. You start by doing whatever makes sense to reduce the amount of the causative agent - CO2 - in the atmosphere.

Your position still appears to be that we do nothing until the full plan is devised. You wouldn't apply that kind of thinking to a medical or domestic problem, would you? If we had mice in this house I might want to call in a pest control expert and maybe think of getting in a builder to seal up entry points. But while that was being sorted out I'd put down some mouse traps and take more care about leaving food around and accessible to the mice.

I haven't stated such a position at all..

You proclaimed the immediate danger of rising water, and you have yet to offer any realistic suggestions about what to do about it.

Of course C02 is a big part of our problem, but if we could reduce C02 in the atmosphere to an acceptable level today, what would that do to your rising water scenario for the next 50 years?

Is it going to bust your chops to agree the best thing to do in the short term is to move to higher ground?

It’s as if she has been reading this thread. Yes, people, even some in this thread, are feeling threatened by Greta.

Not everyone can just pick up and move, and there's not much space for growing crops on "higher ground". Good fortune to you if you have the ability. Just don't expect us to see your "solution" as anything else but cynical dodging of responsibility.

Gonna ignore all the climate denial from the usual suspects.

A co-worker just informed me of a meme-image he recieved in a Messenger-group. It depicted a pornographic image of a woman being penetrated from behind. Greta Thunberg's face had been pasted on top of the woman's face. The caption read (translated) "Be careful where you put it, I don't want to release any gas".

This is the level the right wing is at right now. Faking child porn because they don't like what a 16 year old girl has to say about the climate she will be forced to grow up in.

In a world where cartoon depictions of child pornography are illegal, it would seem to me that this would certainly count as creating and distributing child pornography, and is therefore illegal.

Someone called Andrew Bolt is in the news today for apparently attacking Greta Thunberg, the teenage climate change campaigner (who, I was surprised to note) has not been mentioned on this forum before - at least searching for "Thunberg" gives no results).

Unfortunately Bolt's column is behind a paywall, so I can't see exactly what he said, beyond his opening few paragraphs, which include:

"No teenager is more freakishly influential than Greta Thunberg, the deeply disturbed messiah of the global warming movement.

...

I have never seen a girl so young and with so many mental disorders treated by so many adults as a guru."

So, Thunberg - a force for much-needed change, or a mentally ill "pig-tailed soothsayer". Or something else?
Greta Thunberg looks exactly like Hitler Youth. Blond-haired, blue eyes, pigtails apple cheeks and all. I read somewhere that she has Aspergers. Whoever is putting her up to these speeches isn't doing her any favors as she is missing a lot of school.

As for her speech, someone told her to say that. She didn't come to these conclusions on her own. I agree that we should decrease our carbon dioxide emissions but we have actually done that already in many cases. All countries have machines and we need to run these machines if we want a job. You can't have everything.

- First, there need to be higher taxes all around. The tax-income need to be used partly for innovations in green energy and transport, and partly to completely shift society to at least carbon neutrality.

- Air travel needs to be seriously restricted - if not banned - until such a time that aero-fuels are completely free of green house gasses.

- Cars need to be non-emitting or banned.

- All industry need to be non-emitting or banned.

- All of this needs to be done in cooperation with all nations of the world.

- We have about 10 years to get it going.

It should be noted that if we had started earlier, we could have gotten away easier, but continued denial of the science has made sure we're now in trouble.

All excellent ideas.. I hope there will be much more worldwide support for those and other actions as soon as possible.

With the chance that those actions are not carried out, or are too little to late, do you think it might still be a good idea to have a plan to depopulate lands that will be inundated by rising sea levels?

What is it with you lot?
Are all your kids thick as **** or something?

What about her speech is something she couldn't have pieced together herself from easily available info on the web?

As for the first para, you're just parroting the same crap the other arses are.

No, he has a point, because every politician, captain of industry or high profile civil servant writes their own speeches, don't they? Donald certainly writes all of his, doesn't he?

Not sure whether to describe this comment as sick or whether to ask what your point is.

How dare you refer to me as an arse. I still say this girl is being exploited by left-wing quasi socialists who merely want more power and are using climate change so-called to further their left-wing agenda. Most of this isn't even Americas fault. The countries of South America are cutting down the Amazon rain forest and China is spewing out three times as much toxic waste as we are.

American cars have catalytic converters which keep carbon dioxide out of the air. Americans can't buy an import unless the country importing the vehicles does the same thing. America is at least trying to slow global warming down.

The little Swedish girl lack the education to make the statements she's making and we should be listening to what the scientists are saying. The kid said, "How dare you"?? How dare me? I haven't done a darn thing to her.
