Excellent! A fellow Australian! And I've been finding things out about dowsers recently too. I'd be interested in finding what part of the country this test goes down...

Hmm. A bit of 'googling' indicates Queensland? Depends how many people with the same name exist in Australia. So, maybe I won't get to see the test. :( But it'll be interesting to read what goes down anyway. :) And media attention? Perhaps ACA? :D

A Queenslander? Well, that explains it. The guy has to be as mad as a cut snake. Kangaroos in the top paddock for sure.

Hey, he's not part of my family. Actually, I don't think he is. He probably isn't. Although, he could be long lost cousin Leo who went missing when he was out looking for his pet cane-toad during a lightning storm...

I'd just LOVE to be there if/when this test takes place, but I'm not travelling to QLD to see it, way too hot and sticky up there for me.

It's somewhat embarrassing though to see that an Australian can't even get the challenge application right! I like to suffer under the illusion that we're a little more on the ball than others around the world.

Sight .... disappointment seems to be my lot in life! :(

OTOH, it's always fun to see some clown make a dick of himself! :)

huh? He didn't fail yet. I thought this was one of those forums where people were able to show respect and act properly, at least wait until the applicant does something silly if ever. Until now he has shown just not so proper understanding of the rules and a bit of arrogance.

Anyways, I hope he joins the forums and explains his ability in more detail!

I think they were taking the mickey out of him for being a Queenslander, not for doing something silly.

Don't worry, they'll get theirs.

FYI everyone; the Australian Skeptics did a thorough scientific test for dowsers back in the 1990's as I recall (details at www.skeptics.com.au), all to Randi's Challenge standard. The results and the upshoot were totally predictable! :rolleyes:

Perhaps this gentleman should read that report for a number of reasons:

1) It will show him the type and quality of testing he is likely to have to undergo;
2) It will show him how to test his "powers" beforehand;
3) It will show him the results of previous attempts in the same field;
4) It should show him who will be doing the testing with him - Australian Skeptics are the obvious agents for Randi here.

Yes the AS would be great for this one. I am wondering what is involved in terms of 'media'... would this be seen as worthy of a national broadcaster or perhaps just an item in the local Sunday papers? I'd also, of course, suggest that he checks out "Edge's" application, which I've been reading over recently.

Would he dowse for the toad? :) Actually I think it's be a pretty successful thing to do in Queensland, find toads by pointing some sticks about. We still get the annual report that they're "migrating to Western Australia!!!"

I wouldn't mind a trip up to Queensland to see this. Flights are cheap enough and I need a holiday. Can we arrange for this test to be held over the summer?

Of course, we are jumping the gun a little. My googling also could only find a Queenslander with this name, apart from the one who died in 1985. There may be others.

Hmm, if it's the dead one, then surely his ability to send an e-mail would be sufficient to win the Challenge?

I don't know if you're Australian or not but, if you are, you should know that showing "a bit of arrogance" is about the best way I can think of for getting the p!ss taken out of you in a big way before you even get to demonstrating your "skills".

Well I'll be home in Brisbane for a week in early to mid January. If it's happening then, I might go see what I can do to help out, or at least learn something from the whole process. It'd be a blast.

Mendeli, I'd agree if we were being directly rude and insolent to the applicant. However as ASA said, the guy is a little cocky and being a Queenslander myself, that's something we don't tend to respond well to. Also we weren't 'picking' on him, as much as giving Queenslanders a bit of stick.

Ah, makes me homesick just thinking about it.

Yes Zep, I remember that Australian Skeptics test being shown on TV. All the dowsers agreed to the test and conditions before hand.

Some of them, then changed their mind, when it turned out, that on average, they scored less than expected by chance alone.

Joke time!

(a small preamble for those that are not familiar with Queensland -
A popular brand of beer in Queensland is called 'Four X' or 'XXXX'.)

Why do Queenslanders call their beer 'XXXX'?

Because the can't spell 'beer'!

boom boom!
