The Trump Presidency 15

I guess we've wanted to buy Greenland three times from 1885 or so (for trade route access?) till the late fifties (missile defense/warning?).
There were decent reasons then for the idea.
Now however, what... his legacy?

Thanks to global warming, Greenland is becoming a strategic location. Perhaps global warming also makes resource extraction more profitable.

I genuinely think that his interest in Greenland is pretty good evidence that he knows damned well the earth is getting warmer.

It appears Trump insulted one of his supporters at a rally, but then called to make it up to him afterwards.

Don't worry though, the guy made the excuses for Trump so that it would be easier.

This is just another example of what passes for Trump's 'wit'; making fun of someone's weight like a playground bully. But I guess if you think its funny to mock someone's physical disability, making fun of their weight is hysterical. Trouble is, a fat person mocking someone for their weight is just plain stupid. But then again, Trump IS just plain stupid.

Jeanette Rubin put it beautifully in her WAPO column today": How long until we hear Trump go into a rant about stolen Strawberries?

That's giving him way too much credit. I have two scenarios that I consider equally likely:

1. They had him in the situation room, his mind wandered while staring at a map, and he asked if Canada owned Greenland. He was instantly informed of its status as an independent part of Denmark, to which he responded, "How much do you think they'd want for it?"

2. He is becoming increasingly aware that he is going to go down as the worst human being to occupy the Oval Office and he figured that making the United States bigger would fix that.

It's not the worst idea ever. We're going to need some place to go when Canada builds a wall.

It was already strategic, hence why the US has been continually operating the Thule Air BaseWP there since WW2. They could fly reconnaissance aircraft and nuclear bombers from there to the Soviet Union, and now Russia.

Edit: Not to mention it was the closest location for building an early warning radar station, for detecting any ballistic missiles the soviets might have launched over the arctic towards the US and North America.

I thought the same thing, but I don't think Seward has fared too poorly in retrospect.

Well, that was kind of my point.

When's the last time a massive land purchase went poorly in US history?

Jefferson and the Louisiana purchase, Seward with Alaska, these seem like good, long-term investments.

Sounds like Denmark isn't interested, so maybe it's pointless, but heck... maybe there are Atlantic salmon there or something.

Trump making fun of someone's weight is an odd choice considering he looks like what would happen if Jabba the Hutt had sex with his own sister and produced a horribly deformed incest baby.

That is, as you should well know, a distinct and very significantly inaccurate oversimplification of reality.

Because they weren't. But, then, this is a subject that's a bit annoying. I've ended up "defending" communism far too many times against wildly misguided criticisms, which is actually a bit mind-boggling to me when actual communism has plenty of actual serious criticisms that can be rightfully leveled against it. Similarly, totalitarianism has plenty of actual serious criticisms that can be rightfully levelled against it and criticizing communism for the faults of totalitarianism just keeps the waters muddy and leaves totalitarianism off the hook.

Anyways, random news time.

July was the hottest month ever measured at 1.2 C above preindustrial: Dangerously near 1.5 C Limit

Still a problem that the Trump administration wants to ignore.

Truck drives into row of Jewish protesters at ICE detention center in Rhode Island

Mmm. After watching, honestly, I don't fault the truck driver for being frustrated (looked like that to me, at least), much as I'd say that it was poor decision-making in action and good that no one actually got hurt. Guards employing pepper spray against the protestors, on the other hand, is a more serious problem. Using pepper spray is acceptable in self-defense. This wasn't remotely self defense and opens those who used it to being prosecuted as criminals.

Speaking of ICE, though... Feds had probable cause to arrest plant management in Mississippi immigration raids, but didn't

Quite a bit of "probable cause," for that matter. This just goes to show, again, that "upholding the law" is not what they were actually there to do.

Federal court slams Georgia for security failures
and banned use of paperless voting machines for 2020

I'm mildly surprised at the ruling, but... after the overwhelmingly Republican caused electoral issues in Georgia, I'd say that this is a step in the right direction.

Pelosi Statement on Israel’s Decision to Block Members of Congress from Entering the Country

Trump, of course, was somewhat joyful about part of the US government being denied access to our ally, in his usual petty way.
He was more than overjoyed. He demanded it because the incident was all about demonizing two women from the democrats as part of his re-election campaign.

Trump tweets

Israel was very respectful & nice to Rep. Rashida Tlaib, allowing her permission to visit her “grandmother.” As soon as she was granted permission, she grandstanded & loudly proclaimed she would not visit Israel. Could this possibly have been a setup? Israel acted appropriately!

Rep. Tlaib wrote a letter to Israeli officials desperately wanting to visit her grandmother. Permission was quickly granted, whereupon Tlaib obnoxiously turned the approval down, a complete setup. The only real winner here is Tlaib’s grandmother. She doesn’t have to see her now!

Like it or not, Tlaib and Omar are fast becoming the face of the Democrat Party. Cortez (AOC) is fuming, not happy about this!

Trump Tweets

Great news! Tonight, we broke the all-time attendance record previously held by Elton John at #SNHUArena in Manchester, New Hampshire!

He is the president of the United States and he’s bragging about filling 12,000 seat arenas?
Yeah, this isn’t a normal man.

Plus, he is so full of **** that I am not convinced he really did set a record. After all, if Elton filled it and President Trump filled it, is there anyone here who doubts that the president would announce that as breaking Elton John’s record? In fact I’m not even convinced that Elton John played that arena. I’m not even convinced the Southern New Hampshire University arena is actually in New Hampshire.

The thing here is that the people living there are a part of the cost: Denmark pays for roughly 50% of the public expenditure, or about 750 million USD a year. The US would be expected to pay the same amount of money, for the indefinitive length of time it takes for Greenland to become an independent state.

Since it's quite possible that Greenland will never be able to completely independent while also maintaining a decent standard of living for its people, in large part due to lack of public income, the US would basically be saddled with a very expensive Puerto Rico with snow, for ever.

It's called "The Otisburg Strategy". Just think of all that beachfront property!

Trump accidentally gets something right now and then. I am from NH and I can vouch that SNHU Arena is in New Hampshire. Pretty sure it's still there, I drove by it about a week ago.
