Today's Mass Shooting

America's gun culture is a disgrace.

Western classics, action movies, 2nd Amendment on a pedestal, I think these all get ingrained in the American psyche. Makes it that much easier for a guy to think all his problems can be solved with guns.

How do you solve that? I won't pretend to know.

Daily Mail: One of the shooters in custody is 21 years old. A shooters manifesto is circulating on websites.

Not confirmed.

I agree. I'm sick of this crap. But what to do? What is feasible? Almost every law I see proposed is useless.

When I read about the Garlic Festival shooting I saw that it was a gun free zone, which made me wonder if it's smart to have such spaces in a society full of gun owners.

But then I think wow it would sure be nice if we did the opposite and got rid of most of the guns. But how?

I was a gun owner until about a year ago - just one. I'll tell ya, having two shootings near me in just a few weeks has had an affect on my attitude. And I'm sick of movies always devolving into a gun battle. The more I see the more disgusted I am.

A lot of my arguments here against gun laws are about most proposed laws being ineffective. I was never a gun enthusiast - like a lot of things here I argue against ideas I do not like, which does not mean I prefer the other side's argument either.

I don't know what should be done. My sister argues that she should be able to plink targets if she so desires. At this point I find that attitude repugnant. I myself would find it very difficult to defend my hobby with all the death surrounding it.

Answers - I have none except to abolish or alter the second amendment. I've given it a lot of thought and I see no other way. I'd be willing to change that and I think that is what needs to be done. Hopefully there are more people out there that are changing their opinions on this.

But again, removing the guns from society - haha. Sure good luck with that. Maybe we're just stuck with this.

He's wearing sound protection headgear. Doesn't seem dressed or equipped with "tactical gear" other than the rifle.

Eh, his getup (cargo pants - possibly of the "tactical" variety, like 5.11s, and a black tshirt) is pretty typical of modern "tactical" style. Or maybe casual tactical might be more accurate. Just watch any gun video on youtube, and chances are, you'll see a person dressed like that. True, he isn't wearing anything like body armor or other military-style equipment, but how many of the modern mass shooters have? I'm kind of asking seriously here, I really don't know - as far as I know, they're mostly disaffected young men, who I assume basically dressed like that during their attacks. Either way, I don't think his choice of clothing really matters much.

The gun is totally an AK varient from that picture, though. Kind of strange to see that in attacks two weeks in a row when ARs were so common beforehand. I'm not sure if there's any significance.

Some updated information:

"Multiple" fatalities reported. 18 was an early number of casualties taken to hospitals, not the number of fatalities.

The shooting happened at a Walmart adjacent to a mall, but the entire mall complex was placed on lockdown.

There has been confusion among reports about whether one or three people had been arrested in connection with the incident. The CNN article quotes the mayor of El Paso as saying three people.

Walmarts in Texas are not gun-free zones. "Officially", Walmart managers should ask open-carriers for proof that their weapon is licensed and tell them they must leave if it isn't, or if the armed person refuses to show his license. However Texans in open-carry forums have reported this policy is inconsistently enforced and is completely ignored by the staff at many Walmart locations.
