If you want to go into even more uhm...depth, I recommend the "The Ghost Map of London" by Steven Johnson. It's about the cholera outbreak during the Victorian period and the long overdue discovery of the microbiological source of disease. I listened to it as an audio book in the car on a road trip. It would be best perhaps to not listen to it or read it while eating anything.

The Great Stink of London: Sir Joseph Bazalgette and the Cleansing of the Victorian Metropolis is an excellent book on the subject. The engineering involved in the sewer system is magnificent.

And now I'm reading it. Somewhat repetitive, unfortunately. The same quote from Faraday has appeared at least four times, as has mention of Parliament considering moving.
