Just wondering what Trump thinks Cummings is supposed to do.

He's not the mayor or a city counsellor, nor is he police chief (someone who would have more direct control over what happens within the city.)

He's a congress critter... his job is to represent the city's interests in congress. That includes dealing with economic issues, foreign policy, etc., all of which may impact on voters within the city. Even if he did have an idea for dealing with crime in the city, he is just one vote among hundreds, so his influence is diluted because he has to compete for resources with other districts..

Short of him being bitten by a radioactive spider or being exposed to gamma rays, I can't really see how he is personally responsible for dealing with crime in his district.

How does any of this matter to Trump or his racist disciples? He saw an opportunity to criticize a black man and a predominantly black city and he jumped.

There is nothing racist in stating plainly what most people already know, that Elijah Cummings has done a terrible job for the people of his district, and of Baltimore itself. Dems always play the race card when they are unable to win with facts. Shame!

If racist Elijah Cummings would focus more of his energy on helping the good people of his district, and Baltimore itself, perhaps progress could be made in fixing the mess that he has helped to create over many years of incompetent leadership. His radical “oversight” is a joke!

Trump had nothing to do with Opportunity Zones. That was a tax wonk idea that someone WAY smarter than him devised. Not that it is a raging success either, except as a tax minimisation scheme for those who are already rich and want to speculate more. I'm certain that if Trump was asked what they are and how they worked, he could not explain it in any detail at all. In other words, one of his aides just reminded him of this thing before he tweeted.

Mmm. For the fun of it, since it's relevant - President Lincoln made common cause with socialists and Marx. That Republicans have now made socialism and Marx a bogeyman just shows a bit of how far they've strayed from the ideals that made the Republican Party the great party that it used to be.

In random other news, here's a warning about some of the other crap going on at the EPA.

Short version, the Trump Administration is favoring corporations making a few more bucks over the American people, especially rural Americans, in ways that will likely cost the people and the country immensely more in the long term in various ways than the short-term gain achieved by the corporations and the people who are buying from them.

I don't think I've seen this much use of "socialism" as a right-wing terror word for about 60 years, when the socialist nightmare being discussed was -- wait for it -- Medicare.
Actual Communism having essentially died 30 years ago, it's all they've got.

For that matter, he is not a part of the State government, which control entities like public transit and the MTA police. In truth, like pretty much every major US city, it's problems stem from segregation and redlining, decentralization of industry in the cities, and massive disinvestment which was notoriously bad under Reagan.

In truth, Dolt 45 has far more power to address the issues that Bmore and other major cities face than Rep. Cummings does. And to date, we've seen a few policy shift - an increase in pollutants, which will lead to poorer health, and more exposure to toxins such as lead, and a strong thumbs-up to the police's brutal mistreatment of younger black citizens (mistreatment which, among other things, sparked the 2015 riots and led to the Gun Trace Task Force, which which would give Gotham PD's corruption strong competition). In other words, Dolt 45 is running around hitting people with a baseball bat, and then taking to Twitter to rant about how Cummings is "a violent thug".

IOW, the same racist projection act he pulled with Rep. Omar.

But here's the key: Remember what his campaign workers said. They think that white people are so racist that they will overlook his wide litany of failures and his lack of successes for them, and join him because he hates black people, Latinx/Hispanic people, LGBT people, etc. It's like someone played the notorious Atwater tape for him, he heard "You start by saying '******, ******, ******." and then he lost interest and decided to just go with that.

If you vote for him again, and you aren't extremely wealthy, it seems to me you really are deplorable just like Hillary Clinton said.

Looks like his job application during the Mueller hearing was a success.

Is it bad that I'm just rolling my eyes at this guy and mildly happy that the nominee is not actual the head of a hate group like one of the other contenders? This kind of thing is thoroughly unacceptable, but it's still not the worst outcome.

The sad thing is that I don't think she even is a neo-Nazi. She makes her living by generating controversy, so she spends all her time saying things that are as controversial as possible, whether she believes them or not.

The most infamous time she was caught out was when she was on telly defending a rant she'd gone on about how she doesn't allow her children to associate with other children whose names she doesn't like because they imply that those children are of a lower class and therefore will be bad influences. One of the categories of names she mentioned was of children named after geographical locations, followed immediately by the host pointing out that one of her children is called India.

It's all a show.

Which isn't to say that she isn't really horribly racist and classist, but I honestly wouldn't trust anything she says to be her genuinely-held view.
