Couldn't they re-recruit all the guys that have been cut recently?
Nope much of the winnowing was of the older and more experienced police who took offers of early retirement and the like.

Same has happened in the prison service and all the other services that have been cut, experienced folk go first, because experience equals expensive on the spreadsheet.

Raise the retirement age and cut the available pensions for those police about to retire. That would keep them working longer and so boost police numbers. Maybe you could also allow some recently retired officers back on the job.

Provide all those old officers with zimmer frames for mobility, put them out on the streets and the pledge of 'more officers on the streets' is easily met. :D

Raising retirement age and cutting the pension has already been done. But it takes time to kick in. Getting retired officers to stay and work on was tried, but it was very expensive. A retired Sgt who was re-employed could earn £1700 per month pension and £2400 a month wages, total £4100 a month.

The government is now "working on the assumption" of a no-deal Brexit, Michael Gove has said.

Mr Gove said his team still aimed to come to an agreement with Brussels but, writing in the Sunday Times, he added: "No deal is now a very real prospect."

Hardly surprising, given that one of Johnson's first statements was that any deal with the EU would have to do away with the backstop, which the European leaders have all stated is a no-go.

Probably should cherish the moment, probably the first and only time we will get any honesty out of Johnson's cabinet. We've gone from £350 million a week to simply committing economic suicide so Boris and co can take an axe to workers rights and join a race to the bottom to become a tax haven/sweatshop economy.

Apparently our new Home Secretary wants to make Britain a beacon for the very best international talent.

Why she thinks the very best international talent would want to come to an irrelevant, powerless backwater country she doesn't say.

No you need to parse the code.

We will only take in (Trump voice on) 'The very best people' (Trump voice off) which means we won't be letting in any more of the wrong kind of people - i.e. brown people without PhD's and/or banking jobs.

It has taken 4 days for this Government to go from can-do optimists to doubters, doomsters, and gloomsters.

There are plenty of EU citizens who have been made to feel very unwelcome in the UK.

Not content with smearing leavers as racists, the remainers are now also attempting to smear them as 'far right'.

It's more lying nonsense from remainers: Brexit was never a simple left-right issue - plenty of Labour supporters voted to leave.

Labour have now been pushed by their remain contingent into abandoning their leavers. I understand why they did this - sitting on the fence was losing them potential votes from both sides, and they calculated, correctly I think, that they'd lose less votes by abandoning their leavers then they would by abandoning their remainers.

Still, Labour have now lost lots of potential voters, while the Tories, by adopting a clear, 'leave means leave' policy have gained a boost in the opinion polls. If Labour, aided by Tory remainers, do manage to force an early general election then it's now possible that the Tories will be returned with a workable majority that won't require DUP support to push a proper Brexit through.

Please define that word, in this context.

More lies. Priti Patel and BoJo's cabinet as a whole are far right. Now trot on.

That's the DUP who support a hard Brexit?!?

What the hell are you dribbling about?

You should read the Conservative and Labour Manifestos from 2017 to see how they defined the word at the last election.

Tory manifesto said:
As we leave the European Union, we will no longer be members of the single market or customs union.

Labour manifesto said:
Labour accepts the referendum result and a Labour government will put the national interest first... We will reject 'no deal' as a viable option and if needs be negotiate transitional arrangements to avoid a 'cliff-edge' for the UK economy.

So the Tories have maintained their promises - and even agree with Labour that an agreed deal is better than a no-deal - providing the EU are willing to negotiate a deal that meets their manifesto promises.

Meanwhile Labour have abandoned their manifesto promises and have now officially U-turned to a remain-supporting position.

2017 was after the referendum and it's unspecific question. Both policies are interpretations of what people may well have voted for. Trouble is we don't really know. If only there was some way of finding out if s particular way of leaving has >50% public support.
