Top European officials have rebuffed the Brexit policy of Boris Johnson after his first speech to UK MPs.

The new prime minister said he was committed to "getting rid" of the Irish border backstop, which has long been a bone of contention in negotiations.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, said removing the backstop guarantee was unacceptable.

Seems like the real target of the VONC is labour, not BoJo.

They are trying to signal to the electorate "when push comes to shove, this is where we really stand and where they really stand."

Utterly unsurprising for those in touch with reality.

Now's not the right time to put a VONC on BoJo and his motley crew of desperados of the worst kind.

It would just look like an ad hominem , aimed at the person or for vexatious reason. For a VONC to succeed it needs to be based on performance, or lack thereof.

The time to do a VONC is when Halloween approaches and there is no sign 'we are leaving, do or die', as BoJo promised. Or when he does a volte face - as he will - about selling the NHS by the pound to Trump private medical insurers.

The timing was off on the call for a VONC in Theresa May which meant she was off the hook.

The time for a VONC is when it is too late to change anything? I disagree.

We saw with May that VONC has nothing to do with performance its all about party ********. A VONC wont succeed in any case because no Tories will back it and the DUP won't either when push comes to shove but they should be made to show their support for the loathesome **** installed as PM so we know where they all stand.

Bit premature. Boris will actually have to do something to make a VONC viable.
I know how much you hate Johnson and want to see him gone, but think for a moment.

If what he has done in his life so far isn't enough then I really doubt anything he does in the next 3 months will change anyone's opinions.

Absolutely. It's a show but that's all politics is nowadays. But it's pretty clear Labour would rather the Tories are allowed to force through a ****** Brexit deal so they can blame them for it than actually prevent it happening

Not content with being an MEP (see the Announciata tweet earlier in this thread on how busy that is), and running a couple of byelection campaigns (which Brexit Part Ltd lost), Nigel Farage is also busy setting up a US not-for-profit lobbying group entitled 'World4Brexit', with the aid of some US Trump-supporting 'Friends of the UK'.

And true to form, he's invoking the great bogeyman of the right, George Soros, claiming that he has been spending millions on the Remain cause.

"Boris Johnson’s government has played down the idea of fresh Brexit talks with the EU unless Brussels first agrees to reopen the entire withdrawal agreement and scrap the Irish backstop, both of which have been repeatedly ruled out." link

And there we have it (or do we?). It'll all be the fault of the EU's intransigence.

Sitting in a London pub reading the front page of the Standard. A minister has leaked news of an emergency budget in Autumn to raise taxes to fund a 'no deal' exit and pay for Boris's spending pledges. Apparently the £26bn war chest will not be enough. No doubt the brexiteers will be all over this fatalistic fear mongering from people who don't share BoJo's optimisation, people who don't believe in Britain rather it is from ....... err....... hard core Brexiteers.

Mark Francois was on Newsnight yesterday, explaining the ERG's plan. Well, I say "plan". They say the withdrawal agreement is dead and Boris should throw all his efforts into negotiating a post-exit free trade deal instead.

So it's No Deal, but don't think about that because it's No Deal instantly followed by <snaps fingers> Free Trade.

So, we've been reassured that it was okay to vote Leave because we'd have a deal sorted out before we even start the legal process of Leaving. Which didn't happen.

Then we had the reassurance that it was okay for MPs to trigger Article 50 because we'd have the easiest deal in history sorted out well before the two years were up. Didn't happen.

Now we have the reassurance that it's okay to crash out with No Deal because a marvellous free trade deal is waiting to fall into our lap. Obviously won't happen.

Fool 52% of us once, shame on us.
Fool parliament, shame on them.
Fool about 30% of maniacs who have completely swallowed the kool aid, oh FFS wake up! How long do we have to keep pandering to these people because they managed to scrape a 52% mandate three years ago to do something that clearly isn't what's now going to happen?

The EU have made it clear that in the event of leaving with no deal the first topics of discussion in any future deal will be the items included in the withdrawal agreement.

I won't buy that. Boris has said that with the right attitude and British gumption you can do anything. The slumbering giant is now awake. Time to MUGA!

A VONC against Boris right now would fail....badly. Pretty much a useless gesture.

I find this hard to believe, but it would be hugely funny/disturbing if it were true ...

"The new leader of the House of Commons, Jacob Rees-Mogg, has reportedly set out a list of rules banning his staff from using words such as “hopefully” and demanding that they use imperial measurements only and give all non-titled males the suffix Esq.

According to ITV News, Rees-Mogg sent out the list shortly after his appointment to the role by the new prime minister on Wednesday night.

Among the words and phrases considered unacceptable were: “very”, “due to” and “ongoing”, as well as “equal”, “yourself” and “unacceptable”. Rees-Mogg was also reported to have banned the use of “lot”, “got” and “I am pleased to learn”."

You seem convinced that the Conservatives would an election if it was held now, but you are in favour of a VONC that has no chance of being anything but an empty gesture, and if by some fluke it did succeed would lead to Johnson consolidating his grip on power? I really don't see the logic there.
