Well, at least more people know now, than before, that Republicans don't mind having a racist leader.

Was that ever truly in doubt ?

Furthermore, this whole row won't make any significant difference to either his approval rating within the party (90% or thereabouts) or among the electorate (40%+) or his likelihood of reelection (comfortably more than 50% unless there is an economic downturn or recession long enough before the election for people to feel the negative effects).

Donald Trump is merely a symptom of the way that more than 40% of the US population thinks:

  • The evangelists will support him come what may because he'll deliver them a reversal of Row vs Wade and they hope that his policies will bring about the Rapture
  • The 1% will support him because Tax Cuts
  • 25%+ are genuine racists and for them this whole furore is a vote winner

Was that ever truly in doubt ?

Given their rhetoric? Yup. The airs that they put on to delude themselves have been quite effective, quite honestly, at least for self-delusion purposes about the group that they're loyal to, and, well, if you tell people something confidently, people will tend to believe you if they're not well acquainted with the topic. For that matter, a whole bunch of Republicans don't believe that they're racist, at last check, with varying amounts of truth to their belief and much of the force of the right-wing propaganda machine feeding them a large range of alternative explanations for why a whole lot of them are being called racist, what racist actually means (and why it's the Democrats who are actually racists, not them), and who's being most affected by the racism that actually does exist.

Either way, I've heard similar BS lines, redefinitions, and justifications from quite a few of them. I admit to being initially swayed by some of it - until I had reason to verify the accuracy properly and found quite a bit of it to be a steaming pile of manure, supported largely by entirely tangential truths to what they're actually arguing.

And those delusions still continue. The rhetoric coming out of the GOP with respect to President Trump's comments, and subsequent doubling-down, is as follows:

  • When the President said to go back to where they came from - he meant their districts, not their ancestral countries of origin
  • In any case anyone who hates the US (and Israel ) as much as they do is perfectly entitled to leave the country never to return - only Real AmericansTM are welcome in this great country
  • The real racists are the Democratic Party for making this a race issue and not there real issuse - a bunch of communist traitors who want the country flooded with illegal immigrants and Islamic terrorists

In any case there's no such thing as racism in the US - a fact proven by the fact that the US has already had a Kenyan Muslim as President

CNN has compiled a list of GOP lawmakers taking issue with Trump’s recent tweets
I'm surprised to see Roy Blunt and Peter King on that list. They are staunch right wingers.
Keep in mind that for at least one of those politicians (Blunt) his criticism of Trump also contained a rather backhanded insult of the Democrats.

"Just because the so-called squad constantly insults and attacks the president isn't a reason to adopt their unacceptable tactics".

(Its pretty much the whole 'fine people on both sides' argument.)

So he is saying that it's his government which is a "complete and total catastrophe"?

I'm sure they'll twist it so that it's the communist-led state or local government which is a "complete and total catastrophe", not the federal government which absolutely totes MAGA

In any case, it's pointless trying to connect two halves of a President Trump sentence - its like a verbal Rorschach test which we should take seriously but not literally

Well any remaining benefit of the doubt Graham may have had from me just vanished. From this point onward it doesn't matter what he says or does.

Has there ever been any real doubt ?

Anyway, his comments will only further endear him to his electorate.

The Democrat Congresswomen have been spewing some of the most vile, hateful, and disgusting things ever said by a politician in the House or Senate, & yet they get a free pass and a big embrace from the Democrat Party. Horrible anti-Israel, anti-USA, pro-terrorist & public.....

.....shouting of the F...word, among many other terrible things, and the petrified Dems run for the hills. Why isn’t the House voting to rebuke the filthy and hate laced things they have said? Because they are the Radical Left, and the Democrats are afraid to take them on. Sad!

If you come after the President, the Country, the Flag - he’s going to defend himself. What the squad doesn’t like is that Donald Trump is enforcing the very laws that are on the books that were put there by Congress.” Jason Chaffetz.
