IMO they wasted a debate chair on Marianne Williamson. Given the DNC excluded 4 candidates you have to wonder if they weren't trying to look fair and balanced, to make up for the Sanders' scuffle. I suppose she has some Green Party voters or something. Or people are just now finding out who the 'not the other guys' candidate is really about.

Andrew Yang got screwed.

His mic was turned off for much of the debate. I don't know if it was just technical difficulties or intentional.

But he was only asked 2 questions and received a paltry 3 minutes of speaking time as a result.

Mainstream media has also been leaving him out of info graphics showing democratic presidential candidates while including others who didn't even qualify for the debates.

If you look at the breakdown of speaking times it's pretty clear the debates are unfair. Whether that is intentional or incompetence I can't say.

Why not both?

---

I figure most of these candidates are thinking that this is their practice run for 2024. Gain experience, demonstrate their willingness and ability to their donors, and write down the lessons learned for next time.

On second thought, it's probably not a bad idea to talk out of turn here and there to get your name and face out there. Nobody is guaranteed equal time up there.

Or they're hoping to be offered VP spot from one of the more successful candidates. Or a cabinet position. Although that might hinge on how mean they were to each other. I don't think Biden's going to be friends with Harris now.

Would not be a bad idea, except that as we know Gore has been permanently sandbagged by the media sound bite. He could come up with a solution to half the world's crises while dancing nude on the Capitol dome, and the media would criticize him for over-intellectualizing, and Trump would tweet "boring!" and the voters would say "yeah," and choose someone they'd be comfortable with at the legion barbecue.
LOL legion barbeque! You are absolutely right on that point.

Yeah, a Biden problem. If he picks a VP out of these 19, it will be lesser candidate. Or a guy with appeal but not points yet, like Cory Booker.

He lost 6 percentage points in the prediction markets. I was also very disappointed that he didn't get more airtime.

After the first debate, we have an important update. Forum member carlitos, a full-blooded gringo and highly-privileged white guy, speaks Spanish much much much better than Beto O'Rourke. Oh my God that was awful.

Seconded. As a mixed race gyy who speaks Spanish and enjoys white privilege 50% of the time :D, all of the attempts at Spanish were embarrassing to watch. Yikes:eye-poppi

I think Sanders has been way too general and relying on "revolution". I see a lot more Warren switches.

Let me explain why I said that Biden's base (again, older black people) "just might" go elsewhere, and not "He's toast".

Black people are very transactional when it comes to working with other racial groups, particularly white people, out of necessity. Sometimes you have to work with a overtly racist person to get to some goal or other, and that includes Civil Rights workers. That's why I'm personally so fast to put clear-cut racists on ignore here - I have no need to deal with such a person here.

Am I appalled that Biden worked with some guy who said "Life, Liberty, and the Right to Pursue Dead (N-word)s"? No. He's a long-time congressman, I expected that. Am I shocked that he didn't like bussing? No, most people never really liked it, regardless of skin color. Black folks wanted good schools in their own neighborhoods, and yeah, Biden's right, to say that black people somehow need white people to learn is pretty racist on it's own. I keep saying, the problem with "separate but equal" was that nothing was actually equal.

I thought Harris was very effective, and showed that, like Hillary, she could get right under Dolt 45's skin and leave him raging for days. Biden was sloppy, and Mayor Pete - I've never been understood why he's such a media darling.

But the average black voter? Depends on whether they see Biden the way I did, or Harris as attacking Obama-Biden as a team. The guy who will really lose is Pete - that answer he gave for police shootings won't fly, and frankly, there's a lot of other ugliness that hasn't hit mainstream news that will absolutely sink him among black voters. But I already knew he was a dead man walking, so I didn't bother.

As far as white voters go? Kinda the same, except the Obama-Biden teamup isn't seen in such powerful terms.

I'm reminded of a joke from about 18 years ago: US Presidents typically go to Canada as their first foreign excursion. GW Bush went to Mexico. The language of Mexico is Spanish, and Bush spoke Spanish. The languages of Canada are French and English, and Bush wasn't fluent in either.
