Weird optical illusion involving faces

I hope nobody adds that is-it-blue dress to the photos. It might cause brains to explode.

While your eyes themselves may be considered a 'decently calibrated' scientific instrument relaying data, the visual center of the brain interpreting the data is absolutely not.

This is generally true of all the senses.

Looks like insufficient data from peripheral vision and brain creativity while filling in gaps give interesting results.

Combined with the rapid changing leads the brain to try to make sense of the face as if they're static, non-changing faces.

An endless stream of freaky gremlins! I wonder if this ever manifests when your eyes swing past a group of people or some similar situation. Could be a source of some such freakouts.

What effect are we meant to be seeing?
I didn't really see what other people are reporting. I can't simultaneously focus on the cross and also notice distortions in the other faces. I kept wanting to sneak peaks at the faces to check, but once I'm looking at the face I'm no longer focusing on the cross.

Our eyes don't see as well as our brain leads us to believe. For example, there is a rather significant blind spot in each eye, but the brain usually fills in what we can't see.

staring at your face in a mirror when it's dark can cause a similar thing, I think it's your brain filling in the gaps.

I've read it has something to do with your eyes or brains growing "tired" of seeing the same thing or something.
