Mom offers child to sex offenders for $500

MARTINEZ -- A 22-year-old Martinez mother has been arrested after police say she allegedly offered her four-year-old child for $500 to sexual predators surfing the Internet in a Craigslist web personal ad.

Police received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding a posting that was soliciting for prostitution, said Martinez police Detective Gary Peterson.

After a person who is not involved in law enforcement contacted Shannon Nicole Woods online, Woods agreed to meet the person for sex, said Peterson.

During the online conversation between Woods and the other person "there was an inquiry about the child and the person offered $500 for sex with the kid and (Woods) did not object to that," said Peterson.
Well isn't that special.

Sounds like entraptment to me.
(a) Entrapment would be if the police placed the advertisement.

(b) How else are the police meant to gather evidence in a case like this? Are they meant to wait until a witness comes forward saying "I had sex with a four-year old, and I'd like to testify"? What were their other options?

The add was for her run of the mill crack whoreing. I dont believe she mentioned child whoreing. It was the cop who brought up the kid sex and opened the idea to her.

Ive always wondered. You know how cops pose as kids on the net inorder to meet with and catch pedophiles. Well what if they meet up with a minor who was pretending to be an old man pedophile? Arent the cops then guilty of child abuse?

You have any references? All I have is the OP.

She was not charged. Here's the relevant quote from today's article:

An acquaintance of Woods, who is not involved with law enforcement, recognized her photograph in an advertisement on Craigslist and contacted her posing as a potential client, police said.

Read the rest here

Bottom line is that she hasn't been charged....yet.

I'm not qualified to say if it was or was not entrapment. I'm curious though, how exactly do you entrap someone to SELL THEIR CHILD TO A SEXUAL PREDATOR?

Entrapment? Who really gives a $hit? I suppose if it is she could avoid prosecution but I damn well hope she loses her child. Entrapment falls flat when it comes to endangering your child.

Mom: But your honor, I was minding my own business trying to get drugs when someone offered me money to let that person have sex with my child. What person wouldn't do the same in my position? Right?

You have to have a license to drive a car but anyone who can spread their legs and is capable of conceiving can have a child.

When the acquaintance offered $500 to have sex with her daughter, she didn't object to it, Peterson said.
What does it mean, "didn't object to it"? Did she pretend she didn't see the offer, did she just continue to offer her own services?

They declined to charge her, they want more evidence, the chatroom dialogue makes it hard to prove ... It looks like this has nothing to do with entrapment or not, the evidence is simply not there.

I like the implications here - what if a posing cop offers services to a posing cop, and both end up in jail ... :)

Entraptment is when the cops get you to do somthing that you normally wouldnt have done without their influance.

If your wallking down the street and someone (an undercover cop) walks up to you and offers you pot, and you dont "object to the idea" do you think you should be arrested for attempted drug trafficing?

Folks,

It wasn't a cop. It's not entrapment. Read the story.

Duh! I didn't say I was clueless.

I understand entrapment. I also understand that it is not as black and white as you would like to believe. I know that if a person is involved in criminal enterprise and a police officer makes a suggestion that would increase the criminality of the enterprise that it is not necassarily entrapment. It depends on a number of issues. And that is my point. I'm NOT qualified to make the judgement in this case. I'm guessing that you are not either. But again, who really cares. This woman was willing to sell her child for sex. Being willing to traffic in drugs or prostitution is one thing. Being willing to accept money in exchange to let another have sex with your own child at the very least should cost you your right to be a parent.I'm sorry you missed my point.

The one article had this statement:

"During the online conversation between Woods and the other person "there was an inquiry about the child and the person offered $500 for sex with the kid and (Woods) did not object to that," said Peterson"

Its not clear if mom offered the kid or was merely asked about it. She may have been pulling the guys leg just to score a john. Seems odd that they let her go. Maybe the evidence aint all that.

We don't know that, do we?
Sexual Predator: Hey RandFan, I'll give you $$$$ if you will let me have sex with your child.

RandFan: Are you out of your f***ing mind?

Shannon Nicole Woods: Hmmm.....

I don't know Bjorn. We should keep a healthy dose of skepticism. Ed knows the amount of spurious information floating around the internet. Perhaps there is an explanation. Perhaps the report is simply wrong. Legally Woods is entitled to be seen as innocent. I haven't seen the emails and to be fair I would want to see them before I made any firm decision but it certainly doesn't look too good.
