Weird optical illusion involving faces

You are seeing their actual faces. The vail has been lifted! They can no longer hide among us!

Looks like insufficient data from peripheral vision and brain creativity while filling in gaps give interesting results.

That was similar to my take. That presented with multiple faces just out of one’s field-of-view, the brain focuses on and enhances/amplifies anything distinctive about the faces for future recognition. But that’s just a guess.

Weird.

Obviously your brain is merging the images otherwise you wouldn't need two faces.
No. You don't need two faces. The same effect happens if you only see one of the faces. You can confirm this by covering the other face with your hand or with an object.

The faces viewed peripherally seem to take on grotesque proportions as they flash by when you stare at the cross. Look at either panel of faces straight on, and you see they’re just normal photos of celebrities.

No, the pictures know when you're looking at them, and freeze in the proper format. When you're not looking, they dance freely.

I am Groot.

I should have tested my hypothesis. That's even weirder.

Actually, my hypothesis would be that it IS merging two faces, just not the side by side faces. I think it's merging the sequential faces instead (or contrasting them in some way).
