Listen, and I know I'm pissing at windmills or whatever the metaphor here is, but Republicans don't care when "those whiny latte sipping liberals" point out that they are hypocrites. They're trolls, stuff like that must makes them hard.

I get how good going through every statement a Republican makes to see if it contradicts another statement they ever made and running through the streets shouting it feels, but it's counter productive.

Their base doesn't care that they are hypocrites and everyone not in their base already knows it.

Yeah but in this case it's more than a simple statement. It was a huge deal back in 2016 and of course myself and others pointed out, quite rightly as we can now see, that McConnell would sing a different tune were the president a Republican.

It's no longer a matter of hypocrisy, but a matter of betraying the very principles that govern democracy and the office that he occupies.

Someone lob an egg at this guy! ;)

Since when has he needed a justification for a rally? No one would have thought a president elect could justify rallies but there we where. Nothing can stop them.

Yup. Of course, pretty much everyone knew that already, of course, other than a minority of brainwashed Republicans, even if a fair few more would troll anyways. It's telling that he would admit to such a brazen lie, though.
 
But why is he saying it? McConnell's m.o. has been to pretend that something would be completely outrageous right up to the minute he does that thing. Why not keep lying until it becomes an issue he can act on?

If you’re lucky, he’ll be doing rallies on behalf of candidate Ivanka “I’d totally do her if she wasn’t my daughter” Trump. If you’re unlucky, he’ll be doing rallies on behalf of Don Junior.

Because this is the new era of GOP ignoring the Constitution outright. They've been pussy-footing around it for a long time. It's time for a big fat "we don't give a **** about democracy and we don't even have to hide it."
 
I've always been too much of an individual to internally get tribal thinking. The first time I encountered it such that I realized the power of it was in an English Language conversation class in Seoul back in the Eighties.

We had as a chosen topic for discussion the way the Japanese government treats residents of Korean descent in Japan as practically criminals. The discrimination was and continues to be appalling.

A student went over each point of mistreatment as Korean classmates shook their heads in disgust.

I then asked a question. I shouldn't have. Students complained to the director of me being prejudiced against Koreans afterward for asking it. I pointed out that each bit of mistreatment Korean-Japanese people received was mirrored by the same in the case of Chinese generational residents living in South Korea. I asked what of that.

The student who'd been making the points immediately answered that that was entirely different.

I asked how.

She replied that the Chinese-Koreans weren't Koreans. What happened to them had no baring on Koreans in Japan.

The light bulb illuminated for me. This was not an issue about Human rights, but the rights of the Tribe, the tribe from which people derive their identities.

So, Lords, Ladies, and People Like Me, in Tribal Thinking it makes no difference that your leader transgresses the Rule of Law. It makes no difference how people of other tribes are treated or mistreated by your tribe. It makes no difference at all. It only becomes an outrage when the others do it and it injures your tribes rights and privileges. Your tribe gets endless outs, passes, indulgences, and mulligans because it is the sacred group, the chosen, the true church, the City on a Hill, and my people. You're either one of the Good Guys, my tribe, or you're one of the others and by nature and tribal loyalty inferior.

So this is what I see over and over in Conservative vs Liberal language. I have a friend who always, on any political issue, frames it as the Liberal persecution of Conservatives.

This tribalism won't even let us think of our common nation, unless we make it all White-Christian again. That's what they mean by "great."

So no surprise the tribe and its leaders can't but be "exonerated" and vindicated.
 
It is the thinking that makes the Revolution eat its children ...
or the MAGA crowd turn against the Tea Party for nit being right-wing enough.

Sometimes it's just about, as you say, wanting your "tribe" to not be attacked.
 
"Sure I'll admit, if only to myself, that what Trump did/is doing is wrong, but the other 'side' being in power is too horrible for me contemplate and I will create a narrative for myself to support that" makes all of this make perfect sense.

As the DemonRATs drool over Mueller's press conference today, and are all fired up to continue the impeachment process which in essence is utterly Ludicrous, more over a non starter. ( they got Bill Clinton on 13 Counts and impeached him) You cant impeach a sitting President plus the minor fact that he was vindicated despite Mueller saying that couldn't exonerate Trump but couldn't charge him either, on a Massive NOTHING BURGER!!! THERE WAS NO CRIME THEREFORE NO TIME for those of you who think this Coup de tat is going to go any where..
