8values - just another political quiz

It got me as Social Democracy, which is probably close, but I tend to be more centrist in better systems.

One of the issues with these tests is that they can't take into account nuance, for instance I do agree that some drugs should be legalised, but many should not, because they do serious harm to the user.

I would note that some questions, such as the very first;

Oppression by corporations is more of a concern than oppression by governments.

Doesn't really have a good answer in my opinion because people can agree or disagree with this statement for several reasons, and those reasons show different political position. For instance I disagree with it because I think that both forms of oppression should be of equal concern, but a capitalist may disagree with it because they trust corporations more then governments.

So yeah, meh.

I have NO IDEA what this means. From my perspective, these are just labels and are counter productive. I have different opinions on every issue and want to believe I can change my mind.

I took the quiz, it's full of weasel words all over the questions. It took most from the well-known political compass and stripped them down here and there.

A few problematic examples:

Taxes should be increased on the rich to provide for the poor.

The answer to this question heavily influences on where you come from. In the US the only sensible answer is "strongly agree", in Iceland the only sensible answer is "strongly disagree".

Or how about this one:

Excessive government intervention is a threat to the economy.

Any reasonable definition of "excessive" makes this statement tautologically true. It's not a matter of agreement at all.

Or this one:

The United Nations should be abolished.

Does this mean abolished and replaced with something stronger or abolished and leave it to the law of the jungle? It's down to your interpretation, but the quiz judges you based on this question.

Just one more:

My religious values should be spread as much as possible.

As an atheist I guess I agree? I don't know. Help?

I give it a D- for pretty colors and four results instead of just one or two.

I come up as a "Libertarian Socialist"

Sorry, that ain't me.

There were questions in there that were open to interpretation and could have resulted in any answer from strongly agree to strongly disagree depending on how I interpreted them.

Also, I answered as a Kiwi, living in this country. If I answered as an American living in America, some of my answers are likely to have been different

Social Liberalism for me. I wonder what the results would be for the people running for president?

I did, it didn't take but a couple of minutes. Surprise! I'm a liberal!

Pretty quick for me. I'm a classical liberal. I could nit pick the questions but that's true of all of these quizes. Its better than the quiz by the Libertarians that basically gives a choice between a libertarian answer and a fascist answer.

Smartcocky's criticisms are largely accurate.

Or this one:

The United Nations should be abolished.

Reminds of the common poll question, "to you think the nation is heading in the right direction." A "No" to that could easily be, "no, its too lefty" or "No, its too righty".

Closest Match: Social Democracy

No big surprise.

So let's check the "labels" on the extremes of the axes (manipulating the URL):

Economic axis: 100% Equality: "Communist", 100% Markets: "Laissez-faire"
Diplomatic axis: 100% Nation: "Chauvinist", 100% World: "Cosmopolitan"
Civil axis: 100% Liberty: "Anarchist", 100% Authority: "Totalitarian"
Societal axis: 100% Tradition: "Reactionary", 100% Progress: "Revolutionary"

I was anti-drug. Believed in strict penalties for the sale or use of narcotics. I was pro-life against gay marriage and I was anti-nuclear. There are others.
Its pretty interesting that you remember. There's pretty decent research that indicates people tend to forget that they ever believed anything differently than they do now. Essentially, we tend to forget that we changed our mind about things.

I was definitely more homophobic than I am now. I used to be a Republican but a fairly libertarian Republican. I don't think I ever thought pot should be illegal. I'm pretty sure I've always been fairly ambivalent about abortion, though, I was probably more pro-life in the passed.

I was a lot more certain about things in my youth though.

I'm a little surprised to still be a Libertarian, after all I read about the evils of Libertarianism here.

Not arguing about the evil of your positions (we all know ;)), but I think it does not speak good for the quiz that someone labeled "centrist" on the economic axis is labeled "Libertarian" in total.

btw, if someone is interested, I heard about this quiz through a tweet by Jakob AugsteinWP who in my opinion is far more elitist than the leftist role he gets to play in German media, He also ended up as a "libertarian socialist". Or at least that's what the tweet said. ;)

Most of us were...before we lived a life of experiences and learned something. Those who still think the same at 20 as they do at 50 haven't learned a damn thing.
