It is true that only two PMs have broken the 10 year barrier but Howard proved to be a surprising performer once elected and maybe Shorten will too.

Howard was surprising only because his opposition was pathetic, and he was a little conniving gutter-rat. Hawke and Keating had him boxed up good and proper before then.

Anyway, I won't divert from the outset. But it's still election day and no result yet. So I'm also not going to count my chickens until they hatch.

It is true that Howard only had to avoid any Hewson like mistakes to let Keating's unpopularity carry the day. But history shows that he had learned a lot from the school of hard knocks since the Hawke/Keating days.
