I love how the man who got elected on "Telling it straight" now has to have everything he says "interpreted" by a bunch of soothsayer like he's the goddamn Oracle at Delphi.

Agreed. The word has certainly lost all connection to its origin as well as any clear meaning more nuanced than "You are saying something I dispute."
 
When Trump said he will “absolutely” release his tax returns he really meant... What? Is it understood the word promise is both a noun and a verb? Definition of "promise" as a noun from Merrian-Webster:

A declaration that includes the words "I promise".
 
Actually it is spot on: What is happening here is people are claiming that although what I am saying is absolutely correct, they are going to claim it is wrong anyway.

LOL, Trump is campaigning on "promises made, promises kept" and in fact claimed to have kept more promises than he made. Maybe if you show us the difference with a few examples where he was "promising" something instead of just saying he was absolutely going to do it, we can learn to tell the difference.

I’m not aware of any state School of Logic in the US.
If your god-emperor wrote a missive and was characterized as “saying” what was written we would only get the same dishonest quibble from you.

I honestly don’t get it.

At The Citadel it was pointed out that saying you weren’t absent for bed-check at 2300 to a superior because bed-check was actually at 2330 was grounds for expulsion.

Has he? No.

I agree with Joe Morgue. There is a certain value in drawing out the Trump defenders. Demonstrate how little they have to work with and the lengths they will go to in order to evade responsible behavior or discussion. It's very telling. A twelve year old kid would see it.

Trump repeatedly said he would release his tax returns. He used the word "absolutely." That's generally considered to be promising something. To insist he never promised because he never used the word promised is idiotic. Should Trump have released his tax returns? He criticized Romney for not releasing his. Is Trump an honorable man, a man of his word? Or just a crass manipulator of facts and people? Is it dangerous to have someone who is both dishonest and untrustworthy in the Oval Office? Many people think it is, it's very dangerous.

Other people don't seem to much care what happens to the U.S. Not really. It's all about some nonsensical belief in "payback." It really is sad. But there's always been people like that around. That's not going to change.
