...and how do you think Trump expected those listening Russians were going to find those emails... look for a pen drive taped to the back of a cistern in the men's toilets at LaGuardia? Left under the seat in the 14th St & 6th Ave Subway station? In a phone booth at the corner of West End Ave & 66th Street?

... do you you really, honestly believe it is just a pure co-incidence that the Russians just happened to hack into a DNC server later on the VERY SAME DAY that Trump asked them to look?

protip: Trump did not actually believe they were missing, nor did anyone with half a brain. He was mocking Hillary

At the least, now we stop discussing whether it was a joke or not.

We can discuss whether or not Trump should have been encouraging Russian interference in our election by publishing stolen emails. I think he should not have. I think it was a terrible decision.

Do you think it's good for presidential candidates to behave thus?

Perhaps you would prefer to focus on whether it was illegal, basic decency be damned. I can't answer that question with any confidence. Perhaps we will know more about the legal issues when the Mueller report is released.

At minimum, I was just correcting your representation of what Trump said. I’ll leave it to others to evaluate how pernicious his full statement is.

His point is that Trump "hopes" Russia will make the emails available. Not merely saying that if Russia does this, then the media will reward them.

Who suggested "publicly commissioned"?

Why must you exaggerate what others are saying? I bet there's a term for that.

In this context, "coverup" means hiding information for the purpose of avoiding the appearance of guilt or misbehavior. Redacting the report in order to keep grand jury proceedings private is not a coverup in this sense.

I believe that theprestige means that Trump could've presumed that Russia already had the emails, though perhaps not identified them, and so wouldn't need to hack further.

But often people don't say what they mean outright. Often this is because what they mean is a poor argument or implausible or narrower than the impression they want the reader to have. "Trump never asked Russia to hack emails," by itself sounds better than adding, "because he thought they already had hacked them; he was just asking them to publish the emails."

Wait! What?

Hilary deleted 30,000 emails, which was allegedly illegal, so investigate her, "lock her up".... except, she didn't really delete them, he was just mocking her.

And the Russians knew all this how... exactly?
