The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

<snip>

(I'll also note that his $91 Billion is the damage estimate from the two hurricanes, and vastly more than the amount of aid sent so far)

Puerto Rico has gotten roughly $11 billion out of around $40 billion which has been set aside for them.

The remainder of Trump's made up number is what is projected that they will eventually need over the long term for a full recovery. Decades, in other words.

I've recently become aware that Dump has no sense of humor. Have you ever seen him laugh? Or even smile? Or tell a joke?

I know that there's a LOT about him that's worse but not having a good laugh once in a while must make for a very, very dreary life. SAD!

A couple of comments from an old (and otherwise unrelated) thread:

Somewhere in the CT forum someone said that CTers don't have any sense of humour. They attributed this to the fact that seeing the funny side of something requires being able to work out how things would normally relate, and then seeing the humour in the incongruous relationship made in the joke. Not actually being able to make any logical connections in the first place rather puts a crimp in all this.

In addition, humour relies on being able to spot what is real and what it fantasy, and this is another skill which they obviously lack.

“It’s a sense of humor, Jim, but not as we know it.”

He laughs at rallies.
If you’re not seeing him laugh you are looking at him only when he interacts with folks he doesn’t like. When he is in his element he can border on being playful -or at least what he thinks is playful.

Also, I’m sure he tells Hillary jokes.

I dunno.

The sheer density of outright, unabashed, easily disproven lies tends to suggest a Trump twit.

His wonks generally try to obfuscate and CYA at least a little bit. There was no sign of that here.
It's far too long for Trump to be bothered typing. More likely someone taking dictation including grammar and spelling, he checks it, and they hit send.

Donald Quixote and his fight against Windmills continues.
Ever since they bested him in Scotland, they are his nemesis.

...This comes to mind -

Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England, wrote this magnificent response:

“A few things spring to mind.

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.

So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.

I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.

And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.

Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.

Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.

And in Britain, we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.

Trump is neither plucky nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.

He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy or a greedy fat-cat.

He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.

That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a sniveling sidekick instead.

There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

* Americans are supposed to be nicer than us and most are.

* You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.

After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of ****. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.

He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.

In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:

‘My God… what… have… I… created?

If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”

Take great delight in pointing out the wind turbines offshore just to the north of the city where I live, and telling people that they are the ones that were built to upset Mr Trump.

So? How is that relevant? You do realize your situation and the president's are quite different. I mean.......wait a minute........unless.............izzat you, Donald?

You must have missed the various comments a while ago that there is no difference between Trump and an ordinary person. For example, a public statement by Trump carries no more weight than a public statement by Martin Frobisher of Boise, Idaho.

It doesn't carry more weight.

US President Donald Trump has been savagely mocked and branded a figure “beyond parody” after he claimed noise from industrial wind turbines causes cancer.

The President made the extraordinary claim while speaking at the National Republican Congressional Committee dinner on Tuesday.

And yet I’ve been assured by our esteemed forum conservatives that Democrats are the party of conspiracy theorists...

New: Chinese woman carrying four cellphones and computer equipment including a thumb drive containing malware has been charged with lying her way into Mar-a-Lago while Trump was there last weekend

Congrats, you caught the thief with the raccoon eye mask and sack with a dollar sign on it. Too bad anyone more tactful than the Hamburgler has already “cracked” the pay-to-play resort the POTUS has relocated government operations to.

Let this news about a woman with two Chinese passports and a device full of malware be a reminder that the Secret Service says it does not maintain visitor logs tracking who enters Mar-a-Lago

I was never planning a vote prior to the 2020 Election on the wonderful HealthCare package that some very talented people are now developing for me & the Republican Party. It will be on full display during the Election as a much better & less expensive alternative to ObamaCare...

...This will be a great campaign issue. I never asked Mitch McConnell for a vote before the Election as has been incorrectly reported (as usual) in the @nytimes, but only after the Election when we take back the House etc. Republicans will always support pre-existing conditions!

"Very talented people" = Insurance company execs.

A couple of comments from an old (and otherwise unrelated) thread:

Preparing for Season 8 coming out this month, I'm reminded that Trump is an older fatter Joffrey. He is a bully who only finds pleasure in the pain of others. And lies about his achievements.
