...what? She either does or does not have charisma.

No, it's not an on/off switch.

Contrary to acbytesla and others, I did not find her presence and speaking style unattractive. She was too much of a war hawk for my tastes but that alone was not offputting. To me her personality was just fine. In fact, I admire her for coming back after what had to be a very painful loss in 2008 and even serving in the Obama administration.

...what? She either does or does not have charisma. What does being "allowed" to have it even means?

This strikes me as simple. Both Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, could simply stride out and discuss anything. To contrast, Hillary put in work. SHe never looked tired, never looked like anything but a leader. SHe always looked like someone who could put a plan into action, that would help everyone.

So I don't see how she lacked charisma.

But the two aren't mutually exclusive!

That's true.

Her problem is the same problem any candidate who uses the DNC inner network of consultants, whatever archaic tome the DNC communications apparatus is working from, and generally follows a failed old playbook.

Replying to a narrative, however absurd, that people are "coming to invade and destroy us" with statistics and academic jargon isn't just flat, it's almost detached. I remarked once during an '08 primary (after a few drinks) that sometimes it was like if HAL9000 was in a presidential debate.

It is worth remembering, Bill Clinton and Obama were the insurgent candidates.

DNC/DSCC/DCCC access is all tied to how much money you can raise, followed closely by how much of it you spend with their "preferred vendors."

Not that this is out of the ordinary. While the committees are not commercial operations outright, entire commercial sectors exist in orbit of them.

While not relating to the presidential race specifically, Democratic leadership recently said they are blacklisting any organization that works with a primary challenger to an incumbent, basically cutting off all expertise and advanced analytics from their own left flank.

Huh? Biden is 2020 Clinton. Old guard. Party leader. Faithful Democrat. He lacks boobs but other than that, what do you want .....

I'd say he resonates more as an Obama guy than a Clinton proxy, not that it matters much.

Indeed, but you either have it or you don't.

But what you're describing is not charisma. Charisma is the ability to engage people. I mean, sure, like SezMe awkwardly pointed out everybody has some of it, but I found that Hillary didn't have much. Trump, for all his gigantic flaws, can at least capture some audience and is absolutely entertaining.

What I see here is a failure to recognize how detached the political profession, and its standard way for political figures to present themselves, are from lots of ordinary people. Acting cold & robotic & serious & polished & practiced does not create the impression of respectability that it's supposed to, at least not for the kind of people who are used to seeing themselves & their kind as constantly being put down and have learned to stand up for themselves by embracing the image that's otherwise used to put them down. It just comes off as fake and arrogant, which means that the opposite, the lack of that kind of pretentious sophistication & restraint, is what comes off as relatable and genuine. Talking down to people does not appeal to them; being a regular person like one of them does.

Terry McAuliffe is making noises about running:

He has one notable strength:

This lengthy history in Democratic politics has endeared the former governor to a number of top Democratic donors, making McAuliffe arguably one of the best Democratic fundraisers of his generation. This also means McAuliffe has a stable of Democratic donors ready to help fund a primary campaign, should he officially jump into the race.

However, this is a vain hope:

McAuliffe believes that it can and has made clear to people he has talked to that he feels the best person to beat Trump is someone who can attack his business record.

In 2016, that might have mattered but in 2020 voters are not going to be interested in Trump's business record. They are going to be voting based on his presidential record.

I dunno. Trump gets hammered on his presidential record all day, every day. People who are already used to that probably won't be impressed by a candidate who only brings more of the same.

As was Jimmy Carter. With the exception of McGovern in 72 and Dukakis in 88, every successful Democratic Presidential nominee since JFK wasn't annointed from above, but won through their own insurgency. Mondale, Gore and HC all were defacto nominees and all had the natural charisma of a wet blanket.

It's like the folks who thought the way to defeat Obama in 2012 was to double down on the birther nonsense, or the way 60 Minutes tried to take down Bush in 2004 with the National Guard stuff or going even further back, the way the WSJ tried to take down Clinton with Whitewater.

No female POTUS for 2020, please

I would very much prefer the D-nominee for 2020 not to be a woman.

For the sake of argument, I will assume that Democrats will take the WH in 2020, because it will be an anti-Trump vote, not one for anyone.

A woman following Trump as President would be bad: it will be next to impossible for her not to look like a feminist stereotype to some, simply in contrast to the current misogynist-in-chief. Just dragging the country back to the middle of the road will make her look like a SJW.
And then there will be the backlash, which will be a combination of "women aren't cut out for the job" and "now that we had a female President, there is no more gender discrimination".

I'm not saying that a moderate male Democratic President wouldn't face similar problems, but many conflicts might feel less dramatic if a t least some degree of "old-boys-club" atmosphere is maintained. I'm sure that many politicians on both sides of the aisle are yearning for more bipartisanship, but for their constituents, compromising with a Woman might make them look weaker and would therefore require them to negotiate harder.

What I would like to see is a Male P / Female VP ticket with the understanding (or insinuation) that, circumstances permitting, they would seek to swap roles after four years.

More on Joe Biden's inappropriate behavior towards women:

As I was taking deep breaths and preparing myself to make my case to the crowd, I felt two hands on my shoulders. I froze. “Why is the vice-president of the United States touching me?”

I felt him get closer to me from behind. He leaned further in and inhaled my hair. I was mortified. I thought to myself, “I didn’t wash my hair today and the vice-president of the United States is smelling it. And also, what in the actual ****? Why is the vice-president of the United States smelling my hair?” He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head. My brain couldn’t process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused. There is a Spanish saying, “tragame tierra,” it means, “earth, swallow me whole.” I couldn’t move and I couldn’t say anything. I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me.

He does seem to have a thing about kissing females on the hair; that's what he was trying to do with that little red-haired girl.

Good god - someone showing some honesty about Creepy Joe. You won't be popular.

I was reminded of Joe's behaviour this morning, when I read how a boxer has been suspended for kissing a woman who didn't want to be kissed.

As I've pointed out - Biden's behaviour would be held as criminal in any other case. I do hope they select him; the attack ads would be worth the price of Trump winning again.
