That question's been asked a few times now, and I bet the GCSB (NZ's electronic security service) is frantically getting that started.

One of the issues that the GCSB faces is that it's banned from domestic spying, as is the SIS.

The 17 year old got what he deserved. He assaulted a man, that man turned and defended himself. That's what I saw. Should he have done it? No, but I sure enjoyed watching it.

I hear this Anning guy is some kind of a-hole, but I'm only judging by what I see in the video.

Some do-gooder thinks it's okay to assault people if they say things that upset him, just like some posters here. He got exactly what he asked for.

The bodyguards attacking him after, not so good, but I absolutely defend Anning for turning and punching him. The kid did attack him. I have no problem with the way it happened personally.

There is enough scope for punching someone in self-defence when you don’t know what’s come your way. I think that’s a fair trade, but his goons went way beyond what was reasonable and proportionate.

I don’t want violence to become legitimized or commonplace in politics, and I disagree with violent assault on any politician. Hopefully Anning will get voted out and simply fall over and break his neck.

Never have just one isolated guard. All what a person needs to do is walk up to this person, shoot him at point blank range with a small hand gun, then carry on. You should always have a second person keeping an eye on the first. Then 6 more people able to respond within minutes if anything happens. So Yes, this is just for the show and overtime.

I think this is all part of the alt-right patois. They spend a lot of time in communication with each other, trading similar memes and making self-referential in-jokes, that what is unintelligible to normal people, has gained its own meaning among their crowd. Unless you think that the police should searching through absolutely every NZ Citizen and Resident's Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other social media accounts all the time, looking for extremists, then unless someone was aware of this guy's actions and reported him, I can't see why you think he should have been located.

I have zero problem with gun licence appliers having to supply their social media profiles and extra searches being done by the people giving them out.

Just add it to the list

Typo, I meant to hit the 4, sadly I didn't see that another body has been found. This makes it worse than Featherston, and thus our worse ever mass killing.

And unfortunately at 50 deaths this now makes a new record for New Zealand for massacres over the past couple of centuries. Previous to this there was the Featherston war camp riot which had 49 deaths in 1943. Oh such a sad day that we learn that this has now been exceeded.

Featherston was an open revolt by Japanese POWs during WW2. It is in no way relevant or comparable to this. The POWs had already made one attempt at and armed revolt on Christmas eve the year before

Yep, the onus needs to be switched. Rather than the Police having to prove that you are not a fit and proper person, the applicant should have to prove that they are.

I wonder what would have happened if someone had reported his Facebook posts to police? Would it have made a difference? Or was what was in his Facebook page too vague to act on?

I'm personally thinking Facebook has a fair bit of in looking at the moment

If they have algorithms that can pick up a chicks nipple and delete it, it can't be that hard to have alerts for uber amounts of posts of guns and key words of hate, they can pick up and report.

Problem is the whole "We are just a platform, not a media outlet, you can't put the onus on us" argument

Why? The kid attacked first. Anning defended himself and his bodyguards neutralized the threat without excessive force.

The kid is now out of jail, and no charges will be brought against him. Anning and his goons may be charged with assault though.

This is what happens in countries where, unlike the US, "Assault" is not defined as "that person looked at me the wrong way and now I'm scared bohoo".

We are not all as laughably weak as you are.
