The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

There was no need for the problem. If Boeing had spent a few more dollars on adding redundant and linked angle of attack sensors it probably would have been ok.

They have been too eager to use grandfather rules to keep obsolete systems in place. For example, no slides to the ground for emergency exits off the wing. Instead the pilots are supposed to make sure the flaps are down and you are supposed to slide down them and land on the ground on your feet due to the gap between the flaps and the ground.

Well, it's all about competition. The 737 faces stiff competition from the A320.

With accusations of antisemitism against the left wing parties of both the UK and now the US. I'm wondering which of the following is true:

  • There really is an antisemitism problem on the left.
  • The US saw how well such accusations were working as a tactic in the UK and decided to copy.
  • Some external body is advising the right wing of both the US and the UK, or otherwise bringing their influence to bear in both cases.
  • Coincidence.
Your third point is true. The first two not so much.

At the root of this is the distinction between anti-Zionism and anti-semitism, and thus the distinction between Zionists and Jews. Zionists claim that they are "the Jews", many Republicans believe them, and many Jews know otherwise. Zionists are telling the Republicans (and British Tories) that this tactic is working for them, and Republicans don't generally meet any other kinds of Jews.

Back in 1917, when Weizmann persuaded Balfour that the world's Jews were Zionists, owed allegiance to the World Zionist Organisation of which he was the head, and so he spoke for them. Balfour said to him "The other Jews I talk to don't sound like you" and Weizmann replied "That's because you've been talking to the wrong sort of Jew". In reality, of course, the Elders of Zion don't exist and the World Zionist Order isn't them and never was.

So the Republican take on this is derived entirely from what they hear from the Israel lobby. The Jews I know aren't buying it, and the general public doesn't care.

Mmm. I'm willing to accept that there's an anti-semitism problem on the extreme left and that it's there for similar reasons for why there's an anti-semitism problem on the extreme right. With that said... the extreme left has effectively no voice in the US, while the extreme right is notably and increasingly in control of the Republican Party and their propaganda outlets. There's just no real equivalence to be found, regardless of how much projection is being employed. Other than that, as has been pointed out, the third may be what's in play, but the source is just as likely to originate in the right-wing groups, especially US ones.

It's using the left's identity politics against us. We're doing a good job of falling all over ourselves to oblige.

Not really that I've seen on the left, when it comes to anti-semitism. There's more of a case for that when it comes to the blackface thing in Virginia, though.

What's really confusing is it's moderate and establishment Dems attacking young new "radicals" over this.

ETA: Fox is running with Pelosi/Hoyer vs. AOC/Omar/Tlaib as a packaged narrative after the former seem to have engaged in a favorite Democratic leadership activity: "hippy punching."

Why would that be confusing? I would dare to say that it's pretty much predictable for several reasons, very few of them kind to the moderate and establishment Dems.

Anyways... arbitrarily selection of news for today. All good news, for once!

Colorado Democrats are pushing an huge overhaul to the laws about oil and gas.

Current Colorado law, as dictated by years of Koch-inspired dominance of that state’s senate, requires state regulators to encourage continued gas and oil development in the state. But consideration of human health concerns (such as the impact of gas drilling on drinking water), are deliberately restricted to what is “feasible and cost-effective.” These are weasel words that the oil and gas industries use to thwart any regulation of their industry that interferes with their profits. The new legislation, as explained by Colorado House Speaker K.C. Becker, reverses the mission of the regulators and orders them to consider first and foremost public health and safety.

“They’re no longer going to be in the position of aiding oil and gas. They are going to be in the position of regulating oil and gas,” Becker said.

Imagine that: a state redirecting oversight of the oil and gas industry back towards the interests of people who actually live in the state, as opposed to the energy companies.

I quite support this change.

Next up... Looks like the Feds are getting involved with the NC absentee ballot fraud finally.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Department of Justice has issued subpoenas for a federal grand jury investigation into allegations of election fraud in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District.

The US Department of Justice’s Public Integrity Section has issued at least three subpoenas for documents related to the 9th District.

The subpoenas come less than a month after the North Carolina State Board of Elections voted unanimously to hold a new election in the 9th District. The vote came at the abrupt end of a four-day evidentiary hearing held by the board that concluded with Republican Mark Harris--the candidate who received the winning number of votes in the November 2018 contest--admitting he had given incorrect testimony and calling for a new election.

A week after the hearing concluded, state prosecutors filed a multi-count indictment against McCrae Dowless, a Bladen County Political operative who ran an absentee ballot operation for Harris and others in the 2018 election, and four associates on charges of possessing absentee ballots, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice related to actions alleged to have happened in the 2016 general election and 2018 primary.

May this be fully rooted out and the conspirators punished.

I am waiting for the Trumpers here to defend his expertise as an aircraft designer?

I am betting Donnie would flunk a first year Algebra course.

I'd bet Donnie thinks Algebra is an ISIS leader. Or perhaps an Arab language news channel.

Trump Tweets

Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions are....

....needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!

I think his quip about older and simpler being better is a none too subtle reference to his wall. Remember that he claimed "it is only a good old fashioned Wall that works!”.

I agree with him that I don't want Albert Einstein as my pilot; Einstein didn't know how to fly.

I can't find it again now, but someone tweeted a reply to Trump's tweet about planes being too complicated which was "My dude, you can't even functionally operate an umbrella. Sit this one out".

All across America, hardworking taxpayers balance their household budgets, find ways to do more with less, and still manage to save for the future.

Washington should treat their tax dollars the same way. President Trump's 2020 Budget will do just that.

He is just appealing to his "We don't need no pointy headed scientists, all we need is common sense and gut instincts and go back to simpler times " base.

Trump and his base can move to some deserted island, then, and have their pastoral paradise. It'll also have the upside of clearing some of the muck from the internets.

Maybe someone should point out to Mr Trade Wars Are Easy To Win that he's pushing people away from a Proper American Company to one of those you're-a-peein' companies.

The Fake News photoshopped pictures of Melania, then propelled conspiracy theories that it’s actually not her by my side in Alabama and other places. They are only getting more deranged with time!

What insane news cycle did I miss?

Consider all the areas where Trump has proclaimed himself as an expert, if not the world's leading expert, where it's obvious he is not only clueless, but that he doesn't even have passing familiarity with the topic. E.g. "I know tech better than anyone".

Now consider how his plane is such a yuge ego symbol, and how much time he spent on it, and how he tried to install his idiot of a pilot as head of the FAA, and how the plane makes him feel better about his tiny little hands.

Trump doesn't actually think that he knows more about "tech" than anyone. But I bet he actually thinks he's a world class expert on aviation safety.

What insane news cycle did I miss?

There's a conspiracy theory that Melaine doesn't actually accompany him to official events and that he instead takes a lookalike.

It's like the whole "Avril Lavigne is dead and her stand-in Melissa took over her life" conspiracy, only far less fun.

The "it's not really Melania with President Trump" thing has been around for a while, implications of body doubles etc. On the face of it, it's pretty stupid, but I've never really taken enough interest to understand exactly what gain anyone is supposed to get from having a random person with DJT rather than his actual wife.
