The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions are....

....needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot. I want great flying professionals that are allowed to easily and quickly take control of a plane!

McCarthy takes the opening Pelosi gave to protect Trump and dismiss the Mueller investigation.

Seems like there's more willingness to attack our own right now.

Interesting he chose to use the Clinton impeachment as an example, which left Republicans looking foolish, rather than the Nixon impeachment, which was an unqualified success for democrats and lead to wave of victories in the next election and ended the careers of some of the most prominent enablers.

In fact, the midterm wave victory after Nixon resigned was the biggest change in the House in history... until this last election in 2018.

Man, this guy is a moron. One does not need to be a computer scientist to fly a plane any more than it requires a computer scientist to use an I-Pad or any kther kind of computer. The man proves almost daily that he is an idiot of major proportions.

The thing is that nixon had lost half the republican party with the saturday night massacre. Trump has them and Nixon was really bipartisan.

If he doesn't want Einstein involved in flying a plane, then navigation is going to become something of an issue.

McCarthy takes the opening Pelosi gave to protect Trump and dismiss the Mueller investigation.
As usual the news media cuts off the important part at the end: "...unless the Mueller report is damning enough some more Republicans get on board" or something to that effect.
Or more likely... "We recognize that regardless of whatever Trump/Russian connections are uncovered, Republicans in the senate are almost as corrupt and will never support an impeachment, so it would be a waste of time to try".

Of course knowing Senate republicans are like that and actually saying that they are are 2 different things.

Bibi not doing his American conservative political allies much favors with this statement:

"an important correction: Israel is not a state of all its citizens. According to the Nation-State Law that we passed, Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people, and them alone.”

And he got called on that statement by Wonder Woman....

He is just appealing to his "We don't need no pointy headed scientists, all we need is common sense and gut instincts and go back to simpler times " base.
But ,yeah, that is going to make all the pilots in the Air Force and Navy, who had to survive very tough traiing courses with a very high washout rate to get their jobs feel good.....

And it was those damn computer scientist who made it possible for Trump to tweet his crap.......

On second thought, of all the dumb things Trump has said this might be, in terms of pure stupidity and ignorance, the dumbest.

But the idea that the 737 platform is the reason doesn't make much sense to me given that the 737 is the most popular commercial airplane model in the world today.

But the 737 today is very different from the original design, especially with respect to engines. Originally they were turbojets under the wings, now they are turbofans with increasing diameters which means they have to be mounted ahead of the wings to get enough ground clearance. This moves the centre of thrust further forward which makes the aircraft less stable under full thrust.

Problems are with latest versions with biggest engines and increased automation. Whether there is a design flaw in the software, or pilot training, or unfortunate combination of events is still to be resolved.

So basically they are trying to marry modern tech to a airframe that just cannot handle it?

I am waiting for the Trumpers here to defend his expertise as an aircraft designer?

I am betting Donnie would flunk a first year Algebra course.

Yep. It's idiotic. If ANYTHING, the computers make it easier to fly. For years now, modern commercial airliners can be landed by a total novice doing little more than turning a few knobs. It is arguable that the reliance on the computers decreases the skills of a pilot too much. But that doesn't mean you have to be Einstein or a Computer Scientist to fly a plane any more than one needs to be Einstein to use a modern phone.

Fair enough. Thanks for the info. Sounds like good news for Airbus and the NEO then.

I think you are giving him to much credit. I'd bet my right nut that he would fail elementary school long division and fractions.

Yes. The change in the engines causes the nose to rise. To compensate, the designers added computer code that made changes when the computer thought that the nose was too high. Unfortunately, Boeing thought that this little algorithm and how to turn it off were not important enough to tell the pilots about.

I think he might be able to answer a question asking what is one half of one half. I’m less confident that he could give s correct answer to what is one third of one third. I’d be amazed if he could explain what one fifth of one fifth is.

And after the MOU definition mess up. I strongly suspect that if you had someone explain fractions to him for 30 minutes, there would be no improvement in his scores.

The universal genius declares:

Arguments with aviation industry incoming...

But don't worry it'll probably come down to which CEO talks to him right before he makes his decision.

:covereyes

Or just admit that Boeing's attempt to marry the 737 airframe and SOTA Engines just did not work very well?
It's a shame, because overall the 737's have an excellent record. But the Max version appears to be a "Widow Maker" (Classic pilot's term for a unsafe aircraft).

There was no need for the problem. If Boeing had spent a few more dollars on adding redundant and linked angle of attack sensors it probably would have been ok.

They have been too eager to use grandfather rules to keep obsolete systems in place. For example, no slides to the ground for emergency exits off the wing. Instead the pilots are supposed to make sure the flaps are down and you are supposed to slide down them and land on the ground on your feet due to the gap between the flaps and the ground.
