The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

I feel so bad for that guy trying to explain to trump what an MOU is
I think he thought he was being discreet explaining it to the crowd. I suppose with a normal ignorant dorkus POTUS he's have gotten the hint.

No way is Trump going to admit he was wrong. He doesn't believe he was.

...This is the bluest place in the country. The District's Republican party is one guy sitting alone in a bar drinking shots of Jack on election night.
They have no trouble bussing people in.

Trump is still trying to compensate for his inauguration.

Trump probably had to listen to Roger Stone telling Nixon trivia for decades - no wonder that Tricky Dick is his idea of a President.

I don’t know if this has been posted already, but it’s great:

Clearly, Trump has no idea what a “Memorandum of Understanding” (MOU) between two countries is.

1) I like the somewhat condescending way our trade representative explains it, and then latches onto a simple way to get around Trump’s ignorance on the matter.

2) Watch the faces of the Chinese representatives as this transpires!

"Fun" as that was to watch, it might be worth noting that Trump's not entirely wrong about Memorandums of Understanding. Somewhat directly, it's usually a non-binding agreement, not an enforceable contract itself. In international relations, they're elevated a step and might be enforceable as if they were treaties, depending on the specific situation. Related to that, they've been used a number of times to modify or update existing treaties. I would rate this as... Trump's a little bit out of his depth when it comes to this. Given his history with the US legal system and contract making as a businessman (however poor), it's not a surprise that he would make a mistake like this.

That Trump misunderstood the term in this context is not all that noteworthy. It's almost understandable, but for the fact that he's President and this is something he should have learned about by now.

What is more remarkable is his failure to adjust when corrected. He persisted in his misunderstanding, despite correction. The fella finally saw the folly of trying to explain the issue to Trump (and the embarrassment of doing so in a press event) and decided to just change the terms used.

HOLD THE DATE! We will be having one of the biggest gatherings in the history of Washington, D.C., on July 4th. It will be called “A Salute To America” and will be held at the Lincoln Memorial. Major fireworks display, entertainment and an address by your favorite President, me!

Odds on a Ceaușescu moment?

I'm not going to argue with any of that. The main purpose of my post was meant to be educational, either way. I've never dealt with the term Memorandum of Understanding before and I suspect that many others here haven't, either. Given the context here, it would be easy to infer something erroneous about what they are.

You win the prize for ISF understatement of the year (and its only February!

How can you consider your comments educational and then immediately declare you have no experience with the subject of the duscussion?

The everyman not knowing the term or context is fine. The President not knowing and being impervious to knowing, that's a problem.

I am pleased to report that the U.S. has made substantial progress in our trade talks with China on important structural issues including intellectual property protection, technology transfer, agriculture, services, currency, and many other issues. As a result of these very......

....productive talks, I will be delaying the U.S. increase in tariffs now scheduled for March 1. Assuming both sides make additional progress, we will be planning a Summit for President Xi and myself, at Mar-a-Lago, to conclude an agreement. A very good weekend for U.S. & China!

Especially when that is what they (Chinese and USA folk) had all been discussing and trying to get into place and the person meant to be leading the discussions on the USA side craps all over the work at the "press conference".

And a nice little earner lined up for the Trump organisation so it's a win!

I would so love to see a Trump version (which wouldn't include the summary executions that followed, of course).

The odds aren't that long, IMO. If the economy sours as it's likely to and Trump tells a rally-full of "his" people that they've never had it so good, the coal jobs have come back, farmers are getting rich off the Chinese and Canadians, and manufacturing is roaring away it could just pop off. Especially if a small claque was infiltrated to achieve just that ...

I can just see Trump trying to quell the booing by waving those little hands of his, like Ceaușescu did. That wouldn't so much make my day as make my entire life.

One is bound to wonder if Trump has cleared this with his security people.

The news report below is from a border state, Arizona. It demonstrates the callous deceit practiced by Ronna McDaniel and Donald Trump.
Regarding record seizures of imported meth, my first thought is that efforts to suppress production within the US have been quite successful and demand remains much the same.
