I honestly don't know. I think Trump would've wanted more, especially his wall, but weirdly the government was so dysfunctional that he got nothing done.

All the power, none of the results.

I wasn't talking about Trump, I was talking about the GOP legislators. All they agree on actually wanting is tax cuts. Everything else is just campaign rhetoric.

Look at their attempts to repeal the ACA without any sort of replacement despite years to formulate one and get consensus. They never cared about what the law was, just campaigning against it. They were less prepared for a Trump win than Trump was.

As for Trump, see NAFTA.

I know. But since I was talking about the larger GOP I found it useful to make that small point.

Yeah, it's depressing.

Yes. A far-right conservative federal bench.

I'm not sure the politicians even really want that. If they get a right leaning bench then they can no longer campaign on how much we need a right leaning bench. Kind of like how they finally had the votes to replace the ACA but didn't know what they wanted. They remind me of dogs chasing cars. When they actually catch one they don't know what to do.

Seems like going to the center would be less polarizing and divisive.

Well, if a centrist is what you really want, that guy is already running. He's not running as a Democrat, though. His name is Howard Schultz.

And, in fact, he doesn't seem to be polarizing or divisive at all. Everybody seems to be united in their opinion that he shouldn't run.

We have plenty of centrists. They are mostly in the Democratic party and have been trying "bipartisanship" with the modern GOP for more than a decade.

Didn't work.

Tulsi Gabbard picked up an endorsement of sorts:

White supremacist and former GOP Louisiana state senator David Duke appeared to endorse Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard's 2020 campaign for president as other Democrats are being blasted by pro-Israel lobbyists and publications.

Duke, who was head of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s, posted a set of tweets endorsing Gabbard's 2020 presidential run and changed the background of his Twitter account Monday, which boasts more than 50,000 followers. A "Tulsi Gabbard for President" banner features the banner tagline, "Finally a candidate who will actually put America First rather than Israel First!"

Not that I have a lot of sympathy for Gabbard, but at least let's mention that she rejected Duke's endorsement.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) on Tuesday denounced David Duke, a founder and former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, and rejected his 2020 endorsement.

“I have strongly denounced David Duke’s hateful views and his so-called ‘support’ multiple times in the past, and reject his support,” Gabbard said in a statement to The Hill.

"Centrist" is still seeing everyone as just a point on some left to right line. It's framing it within the same problem.

We need people who have some qualities that appeal to the broadest range of potential supporters. It's not about graphing them on some line.

Every major issue that Democrats advocate are favored by a majority of Americans. How is that not "centrist?"

Because while we like to pretend "Agrees with on the issues" is what makes politics in America, it's not the case.

I agree if it was a matter of "Agree with on the issues" the Democrats would be incapable of losing an election.

We can rant and rave about how unfair it is that a vague, undefined "likeability" is such a big factor, and for the record I'm not happy it is either, but... it is.

What does "likeability" have to do with centrism, though?

Essentially the Democrats need to accept that they aren't loosing election because of their policies so adjusting their policies on some arbitrary and largely B.S. scale isn't going to do any good.

The majority are already at least mostly onboard with what the Democrats want to do on a policy level. I don't think they should mess with that.

So you can be the most bipartisan, straight down the middle candidate and not be a centrist just because the GOP base invents crazy fantasies about you?
