No, I don't mean Louis Farrakhan's stated belief that white people blew up the levees to kill black people. I mean Mayor Nagin lamenting the influx of Mexicans seeking work in the reconstruction efforts.

"How do I make sure New Orleans is not overrun with Mexican workers?" Nagin asked at an October forum with business people as he discussed the city's future.

And this is no overreation; the Urban League, Council of La Raza, the Conference on Civil Rights and even the NAACP are rebuking Nagin for his comments.

Kinda awkward when a fellow who decries perceived racism in the federal response is so quick to slather on a fresh layer of overt racism, ain't it?

"How do I make sure New Orleans is not overrun with Mexican workers?"

Um. A very naughty response to Nagin on this is running around in my head. But it is so politically incorrect I would probably get in big trouble.

I think I've heard that joke myself. Still, it's amazing how much cover the press will allow you if you're a democrat, isn't it? I haven't seen this reported anywhere else today, which is odd because the big news services have been climbing over each other to catch every word out of Nagin's mouth up till this point.

Hmm.

Hmm.

You remind me of someone who called Limbaugh once, complaining that the "liberal media" were not covering some right wing story or other. Limbaugh agreed wholeheartedly about the evil media conspiracy to silence the Right, then asked the caller "How did you find out about it?"

The caller answered, "60 Minutes."

Limbaugh hung up very quickly.

Okay, that's nice, Mark. Thanks for contributing. Be sure to stop back if you have any ideas on why a blatantly racist comment by a high-profile public figure has gone almost completely unnoticed, mmmmkay?

Uh, if it went completely unnoticed, then how did the Urban League, NAACP, Conference on Civil Rights et. al. find out about it and comment so strongly on it?

edited to add--ah, the politicians friend, 'almost completely'

How is his comment 'blatantly racist'?

So you admit that when the minutemen and rebublicans clamour for a sercure boarder, that they are overt racists.

Nagin seems concerned about Mexicans in general, not just illegal ones. I saw this coming from the start - many of the black NO residents who were evacuated lost everything and have no desire to go back. If Mexicans replace the blacks to any degree, it means the loss of a black majority to re-elect Mayor Nagin. And you can bank on that being priority #1 for Nagin. He sure isn't going to be re-elected for his charisma, economic know-how, stellar fiscal policies or his crisis leadership. All he has is "Vote for me, I'm black like you!".

I don't know about Nagan. I saw people complaining about racism on TV using as example the portrayal of barbaric behavior in the Superdome - claims of child rape and murder and so on that did not really happen. But the first place I encountered and such claims was from the mouth of Nagan on the Oprah show. It was him talking about all the awful things that went on in there, most of which, it turns out, never happened.

Well, I knew if I played long enough, Jocko and I could find something we agree on!

I reacted with mute horror when I heard this statement and thought it was rather ironic since most of New Orleans work force hasn't returned because they have no homes. This was blatantly racist and it surprises me that no one else found it ironic, especially considering Nagin's claims of racism during the disaster.

Maybe this give some credence to the comment made by Mexico's President Fox. . .

Mephisto

P.S. I also think that Wildcat nailed it on the head - it probably has MUCH more to do with future votes than racial prejudice.

He is a darkie. Different rules. Hymietown, anyone?

That's ridiculous, Timmy.

Keeping illegals out = legal and not racist.
Keeping Mexican workers out = illegal and racist.

Did Nagin say illegals? Did he say immigrants? No, he said Mexican workers, workers his city NEEDS DESPERATELY right now. I guess he just thinks it's a shame that they're all Mexican. Sheesh.

An excellent example. That's Jesse Jackson referring to New York, for all you youngsters.

And his "love child". "Reverend" Jackson my ass.

And Sharpton and Tawana Brawley. If a white guy said what he said during that he would be David Duked. BTW, he lost a civil suit but never paid, "no money".

Different rules.

Are you suggesting that the national news wires wouldn't be burning if this had been said by a white political figure? How about Trent Lott saying something nice about Strom Thurmond? Remember that one?

Come on, Hutch, you're smarter than that. ;)

Substitute "black" for "Mexican" and say it to the media for a demonstration.
True dat. And WildCat's point is spot on. Had he said "illegal" it would be different, but he did not make that distinction. He said "Mexicans." Not cool.

edited 'cause I didn't like how I used ellipses

Well, keep in mind Trent Lott was frickin Speaker of the House at the time and wasn't known for spouting anything more than the usual political bullflop. Don't get me wrong, Trent's comments were taken way beyond context, but he was kind of an important person.

I think the reason why Nagin's comments haven't gotten the same volume of reaction is because he's the mayor of a defunct town with no real political power who has used up his 15 minutes of fame. I think people are simply just sick of listening to the loony freak.
