Yes, but if you apply a Trump-level intellect to the problem, that issue doesn't arise.

Many factors cause this to be not a big deal:

1. Most illegal immigrants don't sneak across the border. They overstay visas.

2. Skinny people can slip through the 9" gaps between the slats.

3. People with leprosy and small pox are skinny, or on the way to being skinny, saving the Gulf from disease pollution.

4. Because bad hombres have huge thighs, they will be unable to slip through the gaps.

Hence, the people who wash up along the Gulf Coast will consist of bad hombres who deserve to drown.

It's well known, at least in local politics, that voters who are adamantly opposed to something can carry weight far beyond their numbers. The angry negatives are often energized and focused in ways the general population is not. It's one reason why sensible gun control laws are so hard to pass. There is always a vocal minority that is totally opposed and they will work tirelessly to scuttle proposed controls. They will also orchestrate retaliation against any lawmaker who support gun control. Elected officials know that.

Trump either by accident or design, tapped into that part of the electorate on a national level. Below is a passage from a New Yorker article in the current issue. The quote is from Congressman Adam Schiff:
There is a constituency [in the U.S.] with the same kind of xenophobic populism that you see in Europe, in South America, and elsewhere, and Trump tapped into that, but he has certainly made that trend so much worse and more pronounced.” [Schiff] went on, “It’s not just that autocrats are winning in places like Brazil. The far-right parties in places like Germany and Austria are growing. He is undermining people like Merkel and Macron and others who are resisting that.” Link

The fact that Vladimir Putin worked behind-the-scenes to get Trump elected, for the very reason Putin wants to undermine western democracy, is very sobering. Putin chose wisely; I don't think any candidate could have been as destabilizing to democracy as is Donald Trump.

We're not just in for a fight, this is a knockdown kick-them-when-they're-down brawl.

One suspects China’s view that they were safe from any significant issues with the USA because they held so much of USA debt and the USA would never be that stupid has had to be revised with Trump “in control”!

For the fun of it, a bit of context and fact checking.

But the problem with Trump's citation of this poll is that he's read it horribly wrong. The sixty-two percent figure that Trump cited is just related to border security, not his approval by veterans in this poll. That number is fifty-six percent. The number Trump quoted is, more interestingly, also his job approval by just white veterans. That's a disturbing coincidence for someone who is so often associated with racists and racism. In all likelihood, this was deliberate on Trump's part to imply that a larger level of support than he really has. After all, the opinions of his white followers are the only ones that mean anything to him. For the record, the poll shows that only twenty-two percent of African-Americans in the military approve of Trump. And of course, Trump got and twisted this info from his favorite Fox News program, Fox and Friends.

Of course, then there's the related issue of him cherry picking some of the most positive numbers in the survey related to him and trying to use them to create a false narrative of how popular he and his policies are. That's pretty much just par for the course, though.
