Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

Two things I noticed in this letter:

1) He never actually addresses Trump by name, only "Mr. President". That's formally correct, but you just know the guy who sticks his name in big letters on everything he owns is rankling at that.

2) He never talks about serving the President, but does explicitly mention serving the country, and all the members of the military, and the civilian workforce at the DoD. Once again, with Trump valuing personal loyalty above all else, that's a huge slap in the face.

And the best part is, Trump can't even whine about it, because Mattis colored within the lines of a formal resignation letter.

It's also missing a salutation.

What's preferable? Trump leaves the White House via impeachment or fails to win a second term because the economy is mired in a deep recession that most voters blame on Trump?

:eye-poppi

I think the best bet for the GOP is the 25th Amendment.

That way they avoid going through an impeachment, which would probably be embarrassing, and they end up with Pence at the helm. Pence would probably lose the next election, but he wouldn't destroy the party in the process.

Of course I'd like to know if Pence avoided Russian contamination during the campaign.

I am in the White House, working hard. News reports concerning the Shutdown and Syria are mostly FAKE. We are negotiating with the Democrats on desperately needed Border Security (Gangs, Drugs, Human Trafficking & more) but it could be a long stay.
Hey, those TV remote buttons don’t press themselves!

On Syria, we were originally going to be there for three months, and that was seven years ago - we never left. When I became President, ISIS was going wild. Now ISIS is largely defeated and other local countries, including Turkey, should be able to easily take care of whatever remains. We’re coming home!

Americans spend billions of dollars engaging in expeditionary warfare and instead of using the influence they gained to further their own country's interest simply cut and run. It would be as if America decided to simply leave Europe after WW2 was over.

"Good job guys! Hitler is dead and the Nazis are no more. Let's go home and let the Europeans and the Soviet Union handle everything from here."

The crisis of illegal activity at our Southern Border is real and will not stop until we build a great Steel Barrier or Wall. Let work begin!

More like the Soviets halting and going back home right before reaching Berlin.

I won an election, said to be one of the greatest of all time, based on getting out of endless & costly foreign wars & also based on Strong Borders which will keep our Country safe. We fight for the borders of other countries, but we won’t fight for the borders of our own!

It's official: This shutdown won't be resolved until after Christmas.

The Senate is set to adjourn today with no deal. Next formal meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Last week he tweeted that the border was secure.

Getting whiplash here.

My fantasy scenario--

Aide: Um, sir... Your signature was illegible on many of these documents so they will have to be signed again.
Trump: Signed again?
Aide: Yes. To save you some effort, we have consolidated the documents into one single one.
Trump: Great!
Aide: Now, all you have to do is put your signature on the bottom of this one, right under where it says "I re-sign" and that will take care of everything.
Trump: Done and done!

Not sure where it fits on those economic theories, however one lesson of the great Depression is broad-mercantilism tariff approaches are dangerous. For example, Smoot-Hawley.
Beggar-my-neighbour makes beggars of us all. It's a negative-sum game.

Chicago School economic orthodoxy promotes the market above all else, so is pro-free trade. Trump has promoted himself above all else his whole life, sees everything as a zero-sum game, and, of course, has not a clue about trade. His idea that "China" trades with "the US" is bizarre, but there's no great surprise in that.

Plus, he never admits he's wrong. It's so crazy it might work!

The former isn't going to happen unless he wins a second term.

If the Democrat controlled House impeaches him but he is acquitted by the Republican controlled Senate, that would be extraordinarily damaging to the Dems. So we can be sure Trump will not be impeached with the current Senate unless there is a slam dunk impeachable offence and the evidence is incontrovertible. I've seen nothing that says Mueller (for example) has anything good enough on Trump.

Another point of calculation: the Dems might think they have a better chance of beating Trump in 2020 than some other non imbecile Republican. Put it this way, if Trump tanks the economy, and screws up foreign policy, as currently seems likely, but then gets impeached, convicted and imprisoned, Pence (or whoever the candidate is in 2020) can say "hey, it wasn't me, it was Trump".

You can be sure that Mueller hasn't shown his hand.

Even so, it's unrealistic to think that everyone around Trump's campaign was breaking the law like crazy with Trump not being involved. His entire life is a hymn to white collar crime. Making a deal with Russia to smear Hillary in exchange for future relief of sanctions is exactly what he would've done.

Nothing is certain, but the smart money is on Trump being guilty of substantial crimes, and Mueller having solid evidence for it.

He really just can't help himself, can he? His need to self-aggrandize clearly springs from very low self-esteem. He reminds me of the 19th century nouveau-riche who wanted so terribly to join the ranks of the real aristocracy that they spared no expense (literally) to show off their money...including basically selling their daughters for a title.
