To me, it appears that there is a provision that would let Trump fire Powell. Probably all hell would break loose.

Yes, but the damage he can do is limited, because he can't appoint goldbugs or Fox News loonytunes as the new chair. I think the Fed board has been unanimous in its decisions lately, so he'd have to get someone as cuckoo as him to the board first before he can appoint them to the chair.

Not easy, but not impossible.
Tucked away deep inside the Fed’s founding law is a provision Trump could use to completely rebuild the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

...whatever we think about the choice to withdraw troops, it's pretty clear that Trump has gone about this in typical, ego-maniacal, "I alone can fix it" fashion. According to press reports, the pentagon was blind-sided. That's just weird. Then we superimpose Trump's servile attitude towards Russia. That's weird on steroids. Putin can barely contain his glee. All punctuated by Mattis' stunning resignation letter.

I think it's safe to say that no matter where you fall on stay/leave, the way he's going about things is unhinged to an extraordinary degree.
Dotting the i's here...

Donald Trump was supposed to tell his Turkish counterpart to stop testing his patience with military threats in Syria. That is, if the American president stuck to the script.

Instead, during a lengthy phone call earlier this month, Trump shocked even those in his inner circle by yielding to a suggestion from Recep Tayyip Erdogan to reverse the Pentagon’s Syrian strategy, handing the Turkish president his biggest diplomatic victory ever.

As long as no one tells him about it he'll never know. He sure ain't gonna read it himself.

What's preferable? Trump leaves the White House via impeachment or fails to win a second term because the economy is mired in a deep recession that most voters blame on Trump?

:eye-poppi

With volatility indexes really high even before news of the possible Fed chair firing I can only imagine the chaos when the stock market reopens after several days of people digesting just how messed up everything is at the moment.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see something on the level of Black Monday.

For once, Travis, events may make a solid attempt at catching up to your usual hyperbole

Hard to say. The moment Trump was elected, the US was pretty much guaranteed to be ******, so bad. Still, Short-term, though, we'd likely end up better off with impeachment. Long-term... it's sad, but we might be better off with another deep recession slamming it home to the more right-wing people that much of what they support is ******* stupid and helping to prevent politicians from repeating it for the nth time, after causing significant harm every time. That's just dealing with the economy, though. It's hard to predict exactly what the Orange Outrager is going to target to **** up and how much ability he would have to do so with this incoming House.

Talking heads on TV remind me that the stock market has fallen 12% in the short time since "I am tariff man". At some point, do the pro-business types start muttering -- maybe we should consider the 25th?

This has reached a whole new level of OH ****. Only the most impermeable of the cultists don't see how unhinged he is. Right? One can hope. It's on my xmas wish list next to pony.

Pony is a distant 2nd.

You know, every time I hear the term "President Trump" it's like a little glitch in The Matrix. There always seems to be an almost imperceptible pause between the words "President" and "Trump", as if the program has to access the alternate version and insert the name.

I am in the White House, working hard. News reports concerning the Shutdown and Syria are mostly FAKE. We are negotiating with the Democrats on desperately needed Border Security (Gangs, Drugs, Human Trafficking & more) but it could be a long stay.

This. All of the regulations "holding back" the finance sector were put in place for very good reasons. It seems we'll have to relearn those lessons every few generations.

Reality letting out a tiny sigh.

This is clearly, entirely the fault of the Dems taking the house in November, things would still be rockin' in the free world had the republicans managed to hold on to a couple few dozen seats...

:duck:

Best I got, I'm honestly not much good when it comes to totin' water.
:boxedin:

We missed the last exit for the Twilight Zone a while back, we're flying low in uncharted territory now, kiddies.

Not being on the golf course and having to stay in that shabby old White House is going to be tough. Soon he'll be off to Florida and that will provide some fun optics.

On Syria, we were originally going to be there for three months, and that was seven years ago - we never left. When I became President, ISIS was going wild. Now ISIS is largely defeated and other local countries, including Turkey, should be able to easily take care of whatever remains. We’re coming home!
