Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

I think Pelosi should consider a strategy like this...

Under normal circumstances, it would be wrong to approve the five billion dollars. These are not normal circumstances. The events of the past weeks make it painfully clear the POTUS is unraveling. The events of the past two days take it to a whole new level -- we simply can't afford a shutdown at a moment when we appear so weak to the dictators of the world -- the strongmen our president is so infatuated with. Accordingly, we're approving the five billion dollars, with one important qualification that I assume the POTUS will fully approve:

The money must exclusively be used to construct new border wall. Our compromise legislation specifically defines the stretch along the border where the new wall must be constructed. Those of us who are acquainted with the facts do not believe the POTUS can build the wall as inexpensively as he claims. Go ahead Mr. President, prove us wrong. Let's see how much wall you can build for five billion dollars. We're installing Internet cameras so the public can monitor progress.

Playing chicken with a whackjob is dangerous business. It's like driving along in a BMW and getting into a road rage incident with a beater car.

oh my word, I'm actually with you on this. I suspect he is thinking of real coyotes. This exchange really made me chuckle.

ETA: awwww... "Every year, 50,000 illegal children are smuggled by coyotes and criminals into our country." his quote from a few minutes later in the speech.

I think that means nothing. He's reading someone else's words, not understanding them.

I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Pelosi doesn't have a say in this matter. They don't need a single house democrat on this.

I envision her speaking on behalf of Dems because Schumer is such a tool. And because a woman issuing the challenge will get under Trump's skin and he'll take the bait.

Indeed, and:

"The Democrats, who know Steel Slats (Wall) are necessary for Border Security"

"Remember the Caravans? Well, they didn’t get through and none are forming or on their way. Border is tight."

If the border is tight...

Let me get this straight. The border is secure so it needs a wall that the Mexicans are paying for, so Congress has to agree to fund it?

Translation-:

It would not be proper for me to call the president an incompetent dick.

Even if he is an incompetent dick.

And actually he is an incompetent dick.

Really.

Two things I noticed in this letter:

1) He never actually addresses Trump by name, only "Mr. President". That's formally correct, but you just know the guy who sticks his name in big letters on everything he owns is rankling at that.

2) He never talks about serving the President, but does explicitly mention serving the country, and all the members of the military, and the civilian workforce at the DoD. Once again, with Trump valuing personal loyalty above all else, that's a huge slap in the face.

And the best part is, Trump can't even whine about it, because Mattis colored within the lines of a formal resignation letter.

There has never been a president who has been tougher (but fair) on China or Russia - Never, just look at the facts. The Fake News tries so hard to paint the opposite picture.

General Anthony Tata, author, “Dark Winter.” I think the President is making the exact right move in Syria. All the geniuses who are protesting the withdrawal of troops from Syria are the same geniuses who cooked the books on ISIS intelligence and gave rise to ISIS.”

The Democrats now own the shutdown!

Trump's message on the wall is rapidly evolving; he's now conflated it with "border security." If there's legislation in place that leaves some of the spending discretionary, I don't think I have a problem spending $5 billion on border security. I have no reason to believe Trump will make the most of the funding. If he wants more steel slats and they are soundly deployed and maintained, they aren't necessarily a bad idea. They won't stop illegal immigration or drug running, but they might slow it down a little tactically. But I suspect that most of the money will be sucked up by engineering studies, feasibility studies, etc.

The Wall is a symbol more than anything else. It's a symbol I largely disagree with, but more fencing isn't necessarily a bad idea. I just wish DHS did not have such power to waive laws to get it built.

I don't think Schumer is the best choice for spokesman of the Senate minority.

ETA: Maybe the Senate should add the Dream Act. Too much work for 4 days before Xmas though.

Yep.

Can Fox&Friends just become the official Leaders of the Nation?
Having Trump as a go-between is just redundant at this point.

What a great guy!

Sen. Corker, who had been one of Trump's earliest and strongest supporters, was scheduled to visit Trump at the White House. Trump canceled the meeting while he was in the building after he found out that Corker criticized the Syria decision.
The retiring senator went to the White House on Wednesday for a scheduled goodbye visit with Trump, but the president canceled on him after he arrived because he’d criticized his decision to retreat from Syria before heading over from the Capitol.

They haven't spent half the extra they appropriated last year.

Today, it was my honor to sign into law H.R. 7213, the “Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Act of 2018.” The Act redesignates the @DHSgov Domestic Nuclear Detection Office as the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office. Read more: http://45.wh.gov/aWBqYb

Actually an interesting, and disturbing, read. Trump is actively cutting Congress out of the loop on being advised of DHS activities related to the Act.

Section 2(a)(10) of the Act purports to require the Assistant Secretary for the CWMD Office, a position created by the Act, to consult with certain congressional committees before making any changes in the structure or requirements of the “Securing the Cities” program. My Administration will treat this provision as advisory. I hope that consultation will be possible, and I recognize the benefits of working with the Congress on the “Securing the Cities” program. Nevertheless, the Act’s mandatory consultation provision is not consistent with the Constitution’s separation of powers.

Section 2(g)(6) of the Act purports to require the Secretary of Homeland Security annually to provide a report to the Congress that includes recommendations for any necessary statutory changes regarding the CWMD Office, or, if no statutory changes are deemed necessary, an explanation of that conclusion. My Administration will treat this provision in a manner consistent with Article II, section 3 of the Constitution, which provides the President the discretion to recommend to the Congress only “such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.”
