Cohen is being charged for lying to federal authorities. That is his crime.

Cohen acting as a liaison for a business deal between Trump and Russian officials during the presidential campgain is highly unethically, however, it is not a state or federal statute? The conjecture is Cohen negotiated a quid pro quo between Trump and the Russian officials, however, the only evidence the gov has this far is the testimony of Cohen who has agreed to such testimony to lessen the punishment for lying to federal authorities.

Is all of that a fair and accurate assessment of the status of this situation?

There doesn't have to be a quid pro quo for it to be a crime. And most often people commit this kind of treachery without the specific quid pro quo but more of an understanding.

Trump knows he can't be recommending sanctions against Russia while at the same time seeking financing from them. So Trump is being sugary sweet to Russia. But Putin being the former head of the KGB decides it is better to own a United States President than a penthouse apartment. So they terminate the project and start doing everything they can to get Trump elected. They're funneling campaign contributions through the NRA, they're hacking the Democrats emails, they launch a full scale Social media campaign.

:sdl:

That's funny, as if Mueller only knows what Cohen told him. :sdl:

At a fundraiser at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Rex Tillerson agreed to be interviewed by CBS News veteran Bob Schieffer.
When asked if he believes that Russia interfered in the presidential elections, Tillerson replied “there's no question” and that it was well-documented by intelligence agencies. “What Russia wants to do is undermine our confidence and undermine the world’s confidence in us,” Tillerson said. Link

Trump responded by calling Tillerson "dumb as a rock." Great comeback, Donnie.

NBC News reported this evening:
New York prosecutors state in their 40-page document that Cohen admits that during the campaign he violated campaign finance laws by arranging payments to silence women alleging affairs with Trump "in coordination with and at the direction of" the president. Link

I think essentially what happened was, prosecutors impressed upon Cohen that if he wanted to continue stonewalling, in order to protect Donald Trump, he was going to be treated very severely by the criminal justice system. I think the further away he got from Trump the more it became obvious it was time for Cohen to start looking out for Cohen.

Mutual associates say, back in the day, Trump treated Michael Cohen like garbage. Payback's a biatch, Donnie. ;)

I hate to say it. But I feel a little bit bad for Cohen. He's definitely going to prison with the government recommending 4 years. Not that he doesn't deserve it. What's bothersome about it is that I'm sure Trump has committed far more serious crimes with substantially much more money involved. It certainly appears that Trump got away with tax evasion for years. NY State is looking into it and will be suing Trump for it. If they had been aware of it earlier Trump would be facing criminal charges. I believe that is just the tip of that iceberg.

Cohen's core deal is for his wife to stay out of prison.
Given the magnitude of their crimes, four years for one instead of two doesn't sound so bad.

The other reason, in my opinion, why Cohen is getting actual prison time, is to make it harder of Trump to avoid serious consequences: if Cohen is criminally guilty of doing Trump's bidding, then Trump is criminally guilty and needs to go to prison, too (baring the obvious Pardon).

Might have something to do with the whole cover up that makes the things Mueller has found thus far look like literally less than nothing, particularly given how the whole thing has been a total nothingburger thus far.

During the campaign, Cohen played a central role in two similar schemes to purchase the rights to stories – each from women who claimed to have had an affair with Trump – so as to suppress the stories and thereby prevent them from influencing the election. With respect to both payments, Cohen acted with the intent to influence the 2016 presidential election. Cohen coordinated his actions with one or more members of the campaign, including through meetings and phone calls, about the fact, nature, and timing of the payments. (PSR ¶ 51). In particular, and as Cohen himself has now admitted, with respect to both payments, he acted in coordination with and at the direction of Trump. (PSR ¶¶ 41, 45). As a result of Cohen’s actions, neither woman spoke to the press prior to the election. (PSR ¶ 51).

That, right there (your "nothingburger") makes Trump a criminal. The prosecutors at SDNY and the SCO don't just have Cohen's word for this, they have documentary evidence, and supporting Grand Jury testimony from other witnesses.

Its going to come as a real shock to you, but its looking more and more certain that the 45th President of the United States is a criminal, and a recidivist one at that; one who has committed multiple felonies and continually lied about it.

There are also likely to be a lot of people going down with Trump. Remember how Cohen admitted to lying to Congress? Well it turns out that there was quite a number of other people who testified in front of the same Congressional panels, on the same materials, and were telling the same stories as Cohen... Oops!

Have you given any thought as to why so much detail has been included in these sentencing documents, and releases from the SCO. It is quite unusual for so much fine detail to be included in documents such as this. We'll, it ain't rocket science. Mueller knows that there will be a fair number of Republicans (mostly Trump sycophants such as McConnell and Grassley) who will want to bury his final report so that it never, ever sees the the light of day. What Muller is doing is making sure that key information gets out into the public arena. It would seem the only parts that have been redacted are those pertaining to ongoing criminal investigations (presumably so that the targets are not tipped off as to what Mueller already knows). Those redactions will become public-facing once all the shoes have dropped... and when that happens, your Dear Leader is going to find himself up **** creek in a barbed-wire canoe!

Loretta Lynch’s brief Tarmac meeting with Bill Clinton sent the GOP into a frenzy, so surely, there will be intense outrage that the son-in-law of a president, who is under investigation along with him, invited the AG heading the investigation to fly with him on Marine 1.

I believe it was Rick Wilson who noted that Tillerson had negotiated deals of monetary value with rounding errors greater than Trump’s net worth.

I don't think it will come as a shock to him. When was the last time you saw TBD protest Trump's innocence? He doesn't doubt Trump really did do all of these things, he's just trying to salvage what face he can by attacking the investigation into them.

The "Rule of So" states when someone starts a response to an argument or an opinion with the words "So, you are saying that..." or "So, you think that...", "So, you claim that..." or similar, what follows very likely is a strawman.

But in TBD's version 'very likely' is replaced by 'always' regardless of whether it's accurate, inaccurate or even if it's a question.
